This is how badly Punahou's coaches and seniors want to win the championship tonight: There was an unofficial ban on malasadas.

With the Punahou Carnival at full tilt, coach Matt Martinson and senior Karli Look issued friendly reminders about tonight's Division I final against Mililani in the JN Automotive/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships.

“;Hopefully, we can get a win tomorrow,”; Look said yesterday after scoring a goal in Punahou's 5-0 victory over Kalani at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. “;Hopefully, we stay focused even with the carnival. We have to eat healthy and stay off our feet, drink a lot of water and be hydrated.”;

After Look was done with media interviews, she joined her team during its post-match talk. Martinson had the same theme for the defending champion and top seed.

“;Carnival isn't the only place you can get food,”; he told the Buffanblu.

With only three seniors on the roster, there may have been reason to be mindful.

“;There's the potential of it to be an energy drainer,”; Martinson said. “;I'm a P.E. teacher and we've had lessons about fitness and nutrition. Malasadas are not soccer food, but maybe a bag after we play (tonight) will be fine.”;

Kalani coach Michelle Richardson-De Almeida praised her team's tireless effort after three matches in as many days.

“;They did the best they could with what they had left in the tank,”; she said. “;Punahou's holistically skilled, has played together a long time. They're well coached and disciplined players. Their intensity definitely put our girls on their heels a bit.”;

The Buffanblu got goals from five different players against an unorthodox Kalani defense.

Look's goal 4 minutes into the match set the tone.

“;It was a 1-2 combination (play). Susu (Michaela Tsuha) made a good pass to me and I saw Kendra (Trifonovitch) open in the middle. Luckily, we made some eye contact,”; Look said of the give-and-go score.

Lahaina Zoller scored next at the 11-minute mark.

“;Ally (Holtz) took it down the line and beat a bunch of defenders. She had a shot on goal that was deflected by their keeper,”; Zoller said. “;I was lucky enough to be standing there to finish it off.”;

Second-half goals by Lauren Stollar, Jensen Toner and Dempsey Banks sealed the win for Punahou (12-1-1).

Punahou finished with 10 corner kicks to Kalani's one, and also had 13 shots on goal to nine for the Falcons (14-3-1).

Buffanblu goalkeeper Anu Kahele-Meyers was busy with seven saves.

“;They had some nice shots,”; the freshman said.

Kalani's defense, protecting the sidelines, was successful against most teams.

“;Their sweeper plays really deep. We just wanted our forwards to be more active and utilize that space in the middle,”; Martinson said.

Punahou's defense, led by sweeper Kiley Chun and boosted by reserves like Sarah Hayashi, kept a lid on Kalani's offensive stars.

“;Amanda (Kobayashi) and Sonya (Aguirre), they're key,”; Martinson said. “;And Randee (Yamada), she's a go-to scorer.”;

Until tonight, the Buffanblu are going to be clear and focused in a quest for their 10th state title. Even Martinson won't dip into any empty calories at the carnival—yet.

“;I've got to be a good example,”; he said.

No. 2 Mililani 3, No. 3 Baldwin 0

The Trojans advanced to the final, but the win came at a big price.

Hustling halfback Sasha Moscatello left at the 71-minute mark with a left knee injury. It was the same knee she hurt in last year's semifinal round. This time she said the injury is more serious.

“;It might be an MCL,”; she said.

By then, Mililani (17-0) had a 3-0 lead. Two minutes later, it was another scare when forward Mari Miyashiro went down near the sideline with a knee injury.

Miyashiro, who scored two of her team's goals, was able to walk a few moments later, but had a noticeable limp after hyper-extending the right knee.

Mililani kept the ball on its offensive end of the field for virtually the entire first half, but struggled to score until Miyashiro's goal at the 37-minute mark.

“;Dani (Moriwaki) had a nice corner-in. I was fronting the goalie and I sprinted to the ball,”; Miyashiro said of her first-ever header off a corner pass. “;I'm only 5-feet-1.”;

She scored early in the second half on a deflected kick, sending a 10-yard shot into net.

“;Sasha sent a nice ball in and I made a hard run in, hoping I could get there before the goalie,”; she said.

“;We thought we had a chance, but when they scored that early goal, that kind of deflated us,”; Baldwin coach Kawika Keator said.

Lauren Uehara added the final goal at the 59-minute mark, sending a hard, low shot that got under the reach of Baldwin's goalkeeper.

Baldwin (14-1-1) showed a solid passing game, but only after getting used to Mililani's quickness.

“;The speed. We haven't played anybody with that much speed,”; Keator said.

Mililani coach Ray Akiona almost couldn't believe that his two senior leaders got hurt.

“;You count on them, being captains, but injuries are part of the game. They've both worked so hard to get here,”; he said.
