The only thing missing was the malasadas.

Last night's Hawaii-UCLA redux rivaled anything the Punahou Carnival had to offer a mile away. Roller-coaster rides galore and plenty of other sideshows over 2 hours and 43 minutes for the crowd of 2,995 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

In the end, it was the No. 4 Bruins who finished with the fireworks, topping the No. 6 Warriors in four for a second consecutive night. Led by Garrett Muagututia's 25 kills and 16 from Jack Polales, UCLA turned back Hawaii 30-26, 23-30, 30-25, 30-28 to improve to 6-5 overall, 5-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Warriors junior hitter Joshua Walker more than atoned for his sub-par night Thursday, putting down 25 kills. Jonas Umlauft added 16 and Steven Hunt 12 for Hawaii (6-5, 4-4).

Hawaii has two weeks off to think about the ones that got away, with exhibitions against Alberta next Friday and Saturday, and two against Hope International, an NAIA team, Feb. 18-19. The Warriors resume MPSF by playing host BYU on Feb. 26.

“;It got away from us again,”; UH's Brennon Dyer said. “;We had it and then I don't know what happens. It's gone. Think it comes down to the mental game. We have the physical talent, but we just need to get it into everybody's head.”;

Last night was a battle, starting with Set 1. It was reminiscent of the old sideout scoring format, with the teams trading points through two-thirds of the set. Walker's play was also reminiscent of what the junior hitter was capable of prior to his off night Thursday.

Walker, who had eight kills all of Thursday, had six with no errors in eight swings in tying it at 20-20. It was the 17th—and final—tie of the set as the Bruins began pulling away.

Helped by a missed call by the linesman on an apparent ace by Dyer, UCLA went on a 7-3 run to take control. Muagututia continued to be a mystery, putting down his seventh kill on an “;X”; play to end it.

The Warriors, with no aces in Set 1, had two among their first six points in Set 2. Both were “;wounded ducks”; that died in front of the Bruins defense, the first by Nejc Zemljak, the second by Umlauft, which helped UH to a 7-4 lead.

Hunt added another ace, this one hitting the tape and dribbling over, pushing the Warriors ahead at 16-12. The Bruins rallied on two kills by Polales to close to 17-16, only to have the Warriors answer with a 4-0 run that included a monster kill by Walker—his 10th—and Umlauft's second ace.

With Umlauft running his kill total to 10 and Walker his to 11, Hawaii jumped ahead 26-20. The Warriors strung together three straight points, capped by Polales being stuffed by Walker and Dyer, for set point at 29-21.

Hawaii needed three swings at evening the match, with Walker doing it with his 13th kill.

As he had Thursday with 21 kills, Muagututia continued to carry UCLA. His 15th kill sparked a 3-0 run that put the Bruins ahead 11-6.

UCLA, with one ace in Set 1 and none in Set 2, picked up two quick ones via setter Kevin Ker's unorthodox line drives for a 14-7 margin. Hawaii looked to be in deep trouble when falling even farther behind at 20-13.

A seemingly meaningless service error by UCLA's Nick Vogel made it 20-14. Before the Bruins could say “;bad rotation,”; the Warriors had cut the lead to one behind five straight serves by Hunt.

It was 21-20 and then it was over, with Thomas Amberg putting down three kills as UCLA jumped out 25-20. A block of Dylan Bowermaster gave Hawaii hope at 27-24, but that was as close at the Warriors got with UCLA closing it out on a 3-1 run.

Set 4 went back and forth early until the Bruins appeared to take control at 17-13. The Warriors chipped away and—again behind Hunt's serving—took a brief 21-20 lead.

A kill by Polales jump-started a 3-0 run that put UCLA up 23-21, punctuate d by Muagututia's soft shot to an open UH back court.

Hawaii refused to fold, tying it at 25 and 26. Muagututia again bailed UCLA out, with two kills helping the Bruins reach match point at 29-27. Walker's 25th kill held off one UCLA attempt but not a second, with Muagututia ending it with his 25th.
