Classes focus on blood pressure, CPR

The American Heart Association is offering free blood pressure and CPR awareness courses to the public during February, American Heart Month.

The Honolulu Fire Department, which is an AHA Training Center, will offer free blood pressure screenings throughout February from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily at certain stations when firefighters are present. Meal hours from noon to 12:45 p.m. and 5 to 5:45 p.m. are excluded.

Participating stations are Kaimuki, Kalihi, Mokulele, Aiea, Kahuku, Waialua, Kailua, Aikahi, Manoa, Ewa Beach, Nuuanu, Waianae, Waimanalo, Kalihi Uka, Palolo, Hawaii Kai, Makakilo, Mililani,  Waiau and Olomana.

Other events include:

>> Tomorrow—A “;Go Red for Women”; fashion show and health fair at Ala Moana Centerstage. The fashion show, from 10 to 10:45 a.m., will feature survivors of heart disease and stroke modeling fashions by Macy's, sponsor of the “;Go Red for Women”; initiative.

The health fair, coordinated with Boston Scientific, will run from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. and feature an “;Ask a Doctor”; booth. Free blood pressure and cholesterol screenings will be offered.

>> Tuesday—Volunteers will provide free blood pressure screenings and educational materials at select Ross Dress for Less stores. Call 538-7021 for information on select stores.

>> Feb. 13—AHA volunteer instructors will offer a free CPR awareness course from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. at the Great Aloha Run Expo at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

>> Feb. 14—Volunteer instructors will offer free CPR awareness courses from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. and from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Great Aloha Run Expo at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

>> Feb. 27—The annual Honolulu Heart Ball will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Sheraton Waikiki ballroom with an auction. The Honolulu Jazz Quartet, featuring vocalist Genai, will perform. Tables for 10 are available for $3,500. Call 457-4962.
