Kapolei edges 'Iolani to advance
POSTED: Thursday, February 04, 2010
Kapolei withstood a steady 'Iolani attack through a 1-1 tie in regulation, held on through two golden goal overtime periods, and prevailed when goalkeeper Kiana Kaiwi sank the final shot of penalty kicks yesterday in the opening round of the JN Automotive/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships at the Waipio Soccer Park.
Kapolei won the penalty phase 3-2.
“;We were going up against a great ILH team like 'Iolani and I reminded my girls of the David versus Goliath story,”; Beck Said. “;I told them David went with what he had, nothing fancy, and I think we did that today. I told them that David beats Goliath every time I read the story and now we move on.”;
Kapolei (9-4-3), representing the Oahu Interscholastic Athletic Association Red Conference as the fourth-place team, advanced to face third-seeded Baldwin from the Maui Interscholastic League in today's quarterfinal round. As a seeded team, Baldwin had a first-round bye. 'Iolani (9-2-2) falls into the consolation round, where it faces Waiakea from the Big Island Interscholastic Federation today. Waiakea lost 1-0 to Pearl City in the first round.
Kapolei is making its fourth consecutive appearance in the state tournament and finished second in 2007 to ILH powerhouse Kamehameha. 'Iolani hadn't been to states in 11 years.
On the surface, it appeared the Raiders were dominant. They held the ball for most of the game and steadily attacked the Hurricanes defense. 'Iolani had the overwhelming advantage with shots on goal and consistently shut down the Kapolei offense with midfield intercepts. When the ball did penetrate their side, the 'Iolani defenders regrouped with quick passes rather than just clearing the ball away. Raiders coach Kristin Masunaga was obviously frustrated after the match.
“;That's the game of soccer,”; Masunaga said. “;You can have a team that has more shots on goal, play their hearts out, and you still end up losing. We had a lot of opportunities but just weren't able to put it away. We came into the tournament to win and we fell short. But we still have a few games left and we'll do our best.”;
But Kapolei had studied its opponent and adjusted.
“;We knew how dangerous they were inside the area so we forced them to make outside shots,”; Beck said. “;Still, they had some good shots, but we held tight.”;
Kapolei scored first in the 20th minute when sophomore defender Deylynn White, who was playing the opposite side, ran into the area and kicked the ball into the net.
'Iolani evened the score 3 minutes into the second half when freshman Kama Pascua got a nice pass that put her one-on-one with the keeper, placing the ball just to the left to even the score.
Both teams played even until regulation and went through two, 10-minute sudden-death rounds before the match went to penalty kicks.
Kapolei goalkeeper Kaiwi was in the goal for three missed 'Iolani penalty kicks and she had the last shot.
“;I have so much faith in my team and when I went up to kick, I already knew it would go in,”; Kaiwi said. “;'Iolani is a great team and they were probably the first to play really physically with us. My team was physical too. It was a really close game and I'm glad we won it.”;
