Death of security guard is declared a homicide

The medical examiner has determined that the cause of death of the 46-year-old security guard who died following a struggle with a shoplifting suspect in Waikiki last week was a homicide.

Frank Rodrigues suffered a heart attack, according to the Medical Examiner's Office, which noted that contributing factors to his death were arterial stenosis and a struggle with an assailant.

Rodrigues, a guard at DFS Galleria Waikiki, died Thursday after he and another security guard attempted to subdue a man who was suspected of shoplifting at the store the day before. After the man was brought under control, police said, Rodrigues sat on a sofa and became unresponsive.

Rodrigues, an 18-year employee of the company, was taken to a hospital, where he died. The suspect, who was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor assault on the other guard, was released from custody without charges pending investigation.
