Kailua fires up imu for fundraiser

The Kailua High School Hawaiian Ensemble Program will have a fundraising Hawaiian plate lunch sale on Feb. 13. Customers can choose between $10 plates of laulau or kalua pig, cooked in the school's imu.

Call the Hawaiian Ensemble classroom at 263-1435 or Todd Hendricks at 728-7389 and leave a message with your name and the number of plate lunches you wish to order. Deadline is 2 p.m. next Wednesday.

Payment can be made upon pickup from noon to 2 p.m. at the school. If paying by check, make it out to Kailua High School.

KCC chefs head to regional contest

The student culinary team from Kapiolani Community College is putting its national champion status on the line at Saturday's American Culinary Federation Student Team Western Region Championship in Albuquerque, N.M.

Coach Alan Tsuchiyama and his team will compete against teams from Phoenix; Campbell, Calif.; Grand Junction, Colo.; Las Vegas; Portland, Ore.; Orem, Utah; and Renton, Wash.

The regional competition consists of three phases — cold-food presentation, skills salon and cooking, where teams will prepare a pre-assigned classical fish starter chosen from “;Escoffier: The Complete Guide to the Art of Modern Cookery,”; and a salad, entree and dessert of their choice. Scholarships available for cooks

Culinary students can apply for some $150,000 in scholarships, available through the International Association of Culinary Professionals, through March 1.

The 24 scholarships, valid from July 1 to June 30, 2011, are open to those in formal culinary education or doing independent study and research.
