Work slowly up to cutting pet's nails

QUESTION: What is the best way to clip my dog and cat's nails?

ANSWER: Start slowly by getting your pet used to having his paws handled daily. Speak softly as you massage each paw, gently separating the toes. This in itself may take some time as your pet grows accustomed to more handling. When you think your pet is ready, cut one or two nails at a time when your pet is relaxed and have a treat ready. Clip just the very tip of the nail. Avoid the pinkish part of the nail, which is a blood vessel.
