A 20-year-old woman died early yesterday morning after she and a teenage girl were struck by a car after an argument in the drive-through lane of a McDonald's in Nanakuli.

The incident involved an allegedly intoxicated driver. Police arrested a 36-year-old Punchbowl man nearby shortly afterward.

The man was booked on suspicion of second-degree murder and first- and second-degree attempted murder. He was also booked for allegedly driving while his license had been revoked, driving without insurance, driving under the influence and with an open liquor container.

Police said that at about 3:05 a.m. the suspect was honking his horn at a car ahead in the drive-through lane at 87-2028 Farrington Highway.

Inside the other car were three people: a 45-year-old Mililani man, the 20-year-old victim believed to be from Waianae, and a 15-year-old girl.

After the Mililani man got his food, he parked his car, got out and confronted the suspect in the drive-through, police said.

When the woman and the girl entered the drive-through to pull the older man away, the suspect drove his SUV forward, hitting the woman and the girl, police said.

The suspect fled but was found sitting in his car several blocks away on Holopono Street.

Police said the woman and girl were taken to the Queen's Medical Center.

Bryan Cheplic, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman, said the woman was in critical condition and died at the hospital. The girl was in stable condition and released later from the hospital, officials said.

The woman's identity has not been released.

Vivian Roman, who lives on Holopono Street, said police called her at about 3 a.m. to ask whether she recognized the green Ford Explorer parked in front of her house.

She said officers told her the suspect in a hit-and-run was found sitting inside, trying to blend in with the other cars on the street.

She said she had never seen the SUV before.

“;It was 3 o'clock,”; she said. “;This whole world was full of cops.”;

The McDonald's drive-through remained closed yesterday, although the restaurant was open and the drive-through will reopen this morning, a McDonald's spokesman said.

The company had a church group bless the restaurant and pray for the victim and the crew last night.

The spokesman said drive-through cameras recorded the incident, and the video was turned over to police.

The driver has two convictions from March 2004 for felony criminal property damage and operating a vehicle under the influence, according to state criminal records.

He was sentenced to five years' probation for criminal property damage and two days in jail for driving while intoxicated.
