UH show on Beijing opera star
Learn about the career of internationally acclaimed Beijing opera star Mei Lanfang at “;The Art and Life of Mei Lanfang,”; on exhibit at the Commons Gallery at the University of Hawaii-Manoa art department.
Curators from the Mei Lanfang Museum in Taizhou traveled to the school to install the show, comprising historical photos, ornaments, costumes and weaponry from the actor's best-known performances in a 50-year career. Mei is credited with introducing Beijing opera to the United States.
The exhibit runs 2:30 to 4 p.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 8 to 12. Call 956-6888.

Ceramist Esther Nowell, legendary in this town for her whimsical animal figures and beautiful blue-and-white pieces, is presenting her annual show at the Gallery at Ward Centre, “;Beyond the Blue,”; through Feb. 26.
Find gorgeous functional pieces, some in blue and white, as well as endearing miniature sculptures of pigs, horses, rabbits and more.
