Mickelson angry over 'cheating'

SAN DIEGO » Phil Mickelson hinted at legal action yesterday for being accused of “;cheating,”; saying that if the PGA Tour did not do something about him being “;publicly slandered,”; then he would let others handle it.

Mickelson didn't mention Scott McCarron by name in a series of interviews after his third round at Torrey Pines.

McCarron was quoted in The San Francisco Chronicle as saying about Mickelson using the Ping-Eye 2 wedges with square grooves, “;It's cheating, and I'm appalled Phil has put it in play.”;

Mickelson is using one of those wedges this week after reading about John Daly and Dean Wilson using them in Hawaii.

 

No. 4 UCLA stops Hawaii in tennis

No. 4 UCLA defeated Hawaii 4-1 in men's tennis yesterday in Los Angeles.

Dennis Lajola earned Hawaii's only point with a 6-3, 6-4 singles win.

Hawaii (3-1) faces South Florida today at 10 a.m. in Los Angeles.

 

Russell, Zemlja reach Challenger final

Michael Russell moved on to today's singles final of the Honolulu Challenger with wins yesterday at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park.

He will face Slovenia's Grenga Zemlja for the title.

In his semifinal match, Russell beat Donald Young, who retired with Russell leading 7-6 (5), 3-0.

Zemlja beat Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4.

In today's doubles final, Kyu Tae Im and Martin Slanar face Anderson and Ryler Deheart.

 

Sellitto, Nakama at Quarterback Club

Hawaii Pacific men's basketball coach Tony Sellitto and golf pro Casey Nakama are the guest speakers for tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Maple Garden Restaurant.

Sellitto's Sea Warriors are 13-4 overall and 5-1 in the Pacific West Conference.

Nakama is the director of instruction with Casey Nakama Golf Development.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., with the program scheduled to start at noon.

The public is invited.

 

Hawaii Pacific rolls to basketball victory

Led by Jazzmin Awa-Williams' game-high 21 points, Hawaii Pacific defeated Academy of Art 79-57 in women's basketball yesterday in Honolulu.

Four other players scored in double figures for the Sea Warriors (12-4, 8-0 PacWest), who shot 52 percent from the field and held a 42-24 scoring advantage in the paint.

Jasmine English had a team-high 12 points for the Urban Knights (6-11, 2-4).
