Washington » Hawaii's two senators today expressed hope that the United Nations will be able to mediate the Vietnam dispute as has been recommended by President Johnson.

Republican Senator Hiram L. Fong reminded however, “;I happen to know our ambassador to the U.N. had tried on four occasions to get help from the U.N. and always without avail.”;

“;We have always tried to get the U.N. to intervene in the Vietnam conflict, but so far they haven't done anything to lessen it,”; said Fong. “;I do hope that this request today by President Johnson will meet with a different response.”;

Said Democratic Senator Daniel K. Inouye, “;I hope Ambassador Goldberg is successful in convincing members of the Security Council to intervene in the Vietnam conflict and that the U.N. can successfully mediate this problem.”;

Only about a third of the Senate showed up for today's session, and Inouye was one of those who was able to get through the nearly two-feet of snow which blanketed the Washington area over the weekend.

Before the Senate session, Inouye went to the Supreme Court where he sponsored State Senator Vincent H. Yano of Honolulu for admission to practice before the highest court of the land.

Fong has been snowbound at his home in nearby Maryland since Saturday afternoon. Representative Spark M. Matsunaga also was unable to get away from his home. Representative Patsy T. Mink, who lives much closer to the nation's capital, was able to get to her office.
