Second-ranked Kamehameha pulls even with No. 1 Punahou

POSTED: Saturday, January 30, 2010

The Kamehameha Warriors didn't need a perfect performance to get their mojo back.

They just played their best team game of the season in a stunning 60-49 win over No. 1 Punahou last night before a near-capacity crowd at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

Reserve forward Charlton Tang was instant energy off the bench, scoring 19 points on 9-for-10 shooting, while sophomore Dyrbe Enos hit three key treys and finished with 11 points as Kamehameha (16-3 overall) moved into a first-place tie with Punahou (16-2 overall) at 6-1, ending the Buffanblu's win streak of 13 games dating back to mid-December.

Tang had nine points in a row during a crucial stretch in the fourth quarter.

“;I know I'm not the biggest guy, but my job is to bring energy and get boards,”; Tang said.

“;Our guys are stepping up in their roles,”; Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi said. “;That was a monumental win for us. Charlton and Davis (Achong) were huge off the bench.”;

Second-ranked Kamehameha, which took a 3-2 lead and never trailed again, did it without a big scoring night from Micah Christenson, who did just about everything else. With senior guard Chaz Bajet out for the year (knee), the 6-foot-5 sophomore had seven rebounds, four blocks, three steals and was the hub of his team's pressbreaker.

“;If you told me Christenson wouldn't have any points at half, I'd say we're in great shape. It's a testament to how well their kids play together,”; Punahou coach Alika Smith said.

With Nakanishi using a nine-man rotation fluidly, the Warriors shot 60 percent (21-for-35) against Punahou's normally stingy man-to-man defense. They were 5-for-11 from the arc.

Unlike their previous meeting, a 48-45 win by Punahou at Kekuhaupi'o Gym, Kamehameha stayed on the boards.

Punahou had just a 26-20 edge on the smaller Warriors this time. Last time, it was a 41-24 advantage as DeForest Buckner corralled 23 rebounds.
