After living on the edge for two straight matches, Mililani could breathe a little easier last night.

The Trojans needed two overtimes and penalty kicks to survive a duel with Kaiser in the quarterfinals of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference girls soccer playoffs. Then they held off Moanalua 1-0 on Thursday to reach the title match.

Mililani didn't have to resort to such second-half drama in claiming the league title with a 3-1 win over Kalani.

The Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and added another goal early in the second to repeat as OIA Red champion and capture the program's 12th league title and sixth in the last nine years.

“;After our first game it was tough to come back the next day,”; Mililani senior captain Mari Miyashiro said. “;But we just sucked it up and just played our best.

“;It's like your body doesn't hurt any more and you just go with all you've got.”;

Mililani (15-0) will be the OIA's top seed in next week's state tournament, positioning itself to draw a first-round bye after a grueling run in the league tournament.

“;It gives us time to recover and going through a tournament you're going to have your nicks and injuries and hopefully we'll get a bye and that'll give us another day to prepare,”; Mililani coach Ray Akiona said. “;But you also have to stay focused during that day as well.”;

Kalani (12-2-1), the OIA Red East champion, saw a shot at its first league crown slip away as a steady rain soaked the Kapolei field.

“;They're definitely seasoned and today it showed, because they were very comfortable and controlled and we came out a little nervous,”; Kalani coach Michelle Richardson-De Almeida said.

Mililani put the pressure on the Falcons early and broke through as the rain started to open up when freshman T.J. Reyno's shot caromed off the hands of Kalani goalkeeper Kathy Chun and into the goal.

“;The rain came and it just skipped off her hands, it was unfortunate,”; Richardson-De Almeida said.

The Trojans pushed the lead to 2-0 with less than 7 minutes left in the first half when Chelsea Miyake scored on a header off a corner kick from Jennifer Kim.

Mililani added a goal early in the second half when Lauren Uehara found herself with a loose ball and a clear shot from the right side and pounded it into the net for the Trojans' third goal of the night.

“;It was a little bit of relief when we were able to get on the board first and we were able to follow with a couple goals after that, it changed the tempo a little bit,”; Akiona said. “;We spent a little more time controlling and possessing the ball.”;

Kalani got on the board with about 25 minutes left on a goal by Victoria Prince, only the fourth score surrendered by the Trojans in OIA play, after she had just subbed into the match. But the Falcons would get no closer.
