Traffic accidents kill 2 on Maui

A Kihei man and woman were killed in separate traffic accidents Tuesday and yesterday — the first two fatalities this year on Maui.

John Michael Bolosan, 22, died in a crash on Haleakala Highway. At 11:54 a.m. yesterday, Bolosan was driving a 1995 Dodge Neon on Haleakala when he lost control in a curve in the roadway and slid sideways into an oncoming 1994 Ford Ranger pickup truck, Lt. Barry Aoki of the Maui police traffic section said in a statement.

Bolosan was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died of his injuries. It was the second traffic fatality on Maui this year compared with two at the same time last year.

A 42-year-old Kihei woman died after being struck by a sport utility vehicle about 9:09 Tuesday night on Piilani Highway in Kihei, police said.

Shannon L. Vannatta “;was standing in the travel lanes”; and her vehicle was parked on the shoulder of the highway when the accident occurred, police said today.

Vannatta was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
