Book club to discuss 'End of Food'

Join Kokua Market Book Club on Friday when the discussion centers on Paul Roberts' “;The End of Food.”; The club will ponder the book's premise that the industrial food industry is responsible for driving our food economy into the precarious situation consumers are faced with today.

Haleiwa market highlights cacao

Discover the benefits of the amazing cacao at Sunday's Haleiwa Farmers' Market Hawaii Cacao Festival.

The fruit will be featured in a cacao and chocolate recipe contest, with prizes given out in four categories: baked goods, confections, savory and keiki creation, plus the overall Hawaiian-Chocolate Grand Prize, awarded to the most outstanding recipe in all categories using local chocolate.

There will also be food demos; shuttles to and from the Waialua Estate cacao orchard; and the opportunity to buy a cacao tree for your yard. Sales benefit the Urban Garden Center. Keiki activities and live entertainment round out the festival.

Alan Wong's features Big Isle beef

“;You Like Beef?”; is an invitation to dinner, not to put up your dukes, in the case of chef Alan Wong's Feb. 2 menu featuring the Big Island's Kuahiwi Ranch.

Al Galimba and his family raise free-range cattle — grass fed and antibiotic- and hormone-free — on the 10,000-acre Kau ranch.

The dinner at Wong's King Street restaurant will feature a side-by-side tasting of Kuahiwi beef and standard beef. Galimba will talk to diners about the beef.

The menu will also feature Ron and Lita Weidenbach's North Shore tilapia and farm-raised sturgeon from Hilo.

Cost is $80, $110 with wine pairings. Seatings are from 5 to 10 p.m. Call 949-2526.

 

Vino hosts top-rated California chef

San Francisco chef Alexander Alioto will be the guest in the kitchen for a dinner next Wednesday at Vino.

Alioto is a veteran of top Michelin-rated restaurants in Italy and Germany, as well as California's French Laundry. His menu of Italian “;country”; food: Red Wine Poached Egg with Shaved Beef Carpaccio, Risotto Classico, Seared Snapper with Seafood Broth, Seared & Roasted Veal Loin and Coconut Panna Cotta.

Lecture gives seniors tips on taro

Seniors can boost the nutrition in their diets and learn new recipes at the “;Eat Mo' Taro”; lecture on Feb. 4, part of the Kaiser Permanente Senior Summit Lecture Series.

The free session will be held 10 to 11 a.m. at Kaiser's Honolulu Clinic, Conference Room 1-BC, 1010 Pensacola St. The series emphasizes prevention and teaches seniors how to maintain healthy lifestyles. Call 432-2235.

 

Sample sake and usher in fortune

The Kokusai Sake Kai is inviting the public to their “;Setsubun Party”; 6 p.m. Feb. 6 to welcome in the new lunar year. (Setsubun is an ancient Japanese ritual in which households cast dried beans outside to dispel demons, and inside to attract good fortune.)
