Elderly woman's death classified as homicide
Eighty-five-year-old Mary Sobrado, who was fatally beaten, allegedly by her grandson, died of “;assaultive blunt force injuries”; to her head, according to the Medical Examiner's Office. The manner of death was classified as a homicide.
Darrel David Wright Jr., 49, was charged with second-degree murder and is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
On Dec. 16, Wright called police to say he had just beaten his grandmother and to seek help, police said.
Paramedics found Sobrado covered in blood. Police have opened a homicide investigation.
Teenager killed in crash in Manoa is identified
A teenager who died in a crash in Manoa on Saturday was identified as Gerald F. Baltazar of Honolulu, the Medical Examiner's Office said.
At 10:05 p.m. Saturday, Baltazar, 17, was driving a mo-ped next to another mo-ped driver on Oahu Avenue. He crashed into the side of a vehicle after failing to stop at Lowrey Avenue.
Baltazar was pronounced dead at the Queen's Medical Center. Speed was a factor, police said. He was not wearing a helmet.
Travel agency burglarized, safe is taken from office
Police are looking for suspects who burglarized a university-area travel agency sometime between Sunday and yesterday morning.
Police said burglars pried open the front door of the office and took a safe that sat under a desk. The safe contained blank company business checks, police said.
No arrests have been made.
Man, 34, dies after falling from building on Big Island
A 34-year-old construction worker died Friday from injuries suffered in an 18-foot fall from a building under construction near Pahoa on Hawaii island.
He was identified as Jeremy Rose, a Sure Steel employee from Idaho. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center and later flown to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.
Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel and Puna patrol officers responded to the call at about 7 a.m. Thursday.
