Warriors remain No. 9 in AVCA poll
The Hawaii men's volleyball team remained at No. 9 in yesterday's AVCA Division I-II Coaches Top 15.
The Warriors (4-3, 2-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) host defending NCAA champion UC Irvine (4-4, 1-3) on Friday and Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Anteaters dropped three spots from fourth to seventh after losses last week to Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara.
USC (6-1, 4-0) remained in the top spot, receiving all 16 first-place votes. It was the first time in four weeks that the Trojans were the unanimous No. 1 choice.
Despite splitting its matches at BYU, Stanford (3-1, 3-1) moved up a spot to No. 2.
Trading places with the Cardinal was Cal State Northridge (6-1, 3-1), followed by BYU (4-1, 3-1), Penn State (4-1, 2-0 Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) and UCLA (3-4, 2-2).
UH ticket proposal hearing today
A public meeting on a proposal to increase the maximums the UH athletic department can charge for tickets is set for today at the Wong Hospitality Suite at the Stan Sheriff Center. The meeting is scheduled for 5-7 p.m.
According to the proposal, the department is planning for most premium seat, season and individual ticket prices for 2010-11 to remain at this year's levels.
But the athletic department is requesting that the UH Board of Regents approve the increases to the maximum fees and premium seat contributions it can charge for events to “;accommodate potential adjustments for the next three to five years.”;
Local players on McDonald's hoops list
Mid-Pacific Institute's Keaton McFadden and Waiakea's Kami Imai have been named semifinalists for the 2010 McDonald's All-American Girls Basketball Team.
They are among more than 2,000 players from across the country chosen by the selection committee. McFadden and Imai are in contention for the 24 spots on the All-America team.
4 players qualify for Challenger draw
Four players earned spots in the main draw of the Honolulu Challenger yesterday. Tsung-Hua Yang of Taipei upset Daniel King Turner of New Zealand, the top seed in the qualifying draw. Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, Nikola Mektic of Croatia and Jan Michael Gambill also won their qualifying matches.
The matches in the main draw begin at 10 a.m. today at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. Admission is free.

HPU win streak reaches 7
Mana Hopkins scored 20 points and Paris Gravely added 17 to lead the Hawaii Pacific women's basketball team to a 65-51 win over Hawaii-Hilo yesterday at Blaisdell Arena.
The Sea Warriors (11-4, 7-0 Pacific West) won their seventh straight. Natalie Mata led the Vulcans (5-13, 2-5) with 15 points.
