Man critically injured in Nanakuli crash

Alcohol and speed may have been factors in a crash that critically injured a 39-year-old man Saturday in Nanakuli.

Police said a 22-year-old Nanakuli man was speeding in a vehicle on Haleakala Avenue at about 5:40 p.m. when he veered off the right side of the road.

He hit a mailbox, rock wall, utility pole, fire hydrant and tree before crossing the roadway and hitting a utility pole on the other side of the street, police said.

The injured man, a passenger in the front seat, was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Officers arrested the driver at the scene on suspicion of drunken driving, driving with a suspended license and first-degree negligent injury. He was taken to Hawaii Medical Center West with minor injuries.

 

Police investigate grandson in death

Police opened a murder investigation this weekend in connection with the death of an 85-year-old Aiea Heights woman allegedly beaten by her grandson.

Darrel David Wright Jr., 49, called police Dec. 16 to say he had just beaten up his grandmother and to seek help, police said.

When paramedics arrived they found the woman covered in blood.

Wright was charged the next day with second-degree attempted murder. He remained in custody unable to post $500,000 bail.

Police said the woman died Saturday at 3:13 p.m.

 

Haleiwa man nabbed in early morning assault

A 26-year-old Haleiwa man has been arrested for allegedly punching a 40-year-old man.

The older man was sitting on a bicycle at about 2 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Haleiwa Super Market-IGA at 66-197 Kamehameha Highway when the suspect approached and hit him in the face, police said.

The victim, who fell backward and hit his head on the street, was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in unknown condition, police said.

The suspect fled in a vehicle, but officers stopped him nearby and booked him on suspicion of first-degree assault and driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

 

Forgery attempt results in arrest

Police arrested a 57-year-old Kuliouou man on suspicion of first-degree forgery after he allegedly tried to pay for an item with an altered U.S. note.

Police said the man gave a $50 bill to a merchant at the Keeaumoku Street Walmart at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

The store clerk examined the bill and saw security features indicating it was a $5 bill. The clerk called police, and officers arrested the man but later released him pending investigation.

 

Police seek suspect in Waikiki sex assault

Police are looking for a man in connection with the first-degree sexual assault on a 20-year-old man in Waikiki.

The victim was walking home Friday night when he ran into the suspect, who is an acquaintance, and went to the suspect's apartment, police said.

The suspect, of unknown age, assaulted the victim in the apartment, police said.
