Henry Cassiday scored 17 points off the bench as No. 1 Punahou ran away with a big third quarter for a 68-39 win over Saint Louis last night at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

The Buffanblu had a six-point lead at intermission, but used their balanced attack and depth to pull away. Taylor Crabb scored nine points, while Malik Johnson (eight points, five rebounds) and DeForest Buckner (eight boards) anchored Punahou in the paint against the physical Crusaders.

Punahou, which hit seven of its 15 3-point tries, improved to 5-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (15-1 overall) and remained in sole possession of first place. J.K. Duncan added eight points off the bench.

Saint Louis (7-11, 1-5) shot 25 percent from the field (14-for-56) against a tough man-to-man defense and 30 percent from the foul line (7-for-23).

“;We played well for two quarters, but we just lost focus in the second half and got a little tired,”; Crusaders coach Dwight Moniz said. “;Punahou is a great team and they're well coached.”;

The Buffanblu started slowly, missing their first six shots against a tight 2-3 zone as the visitors took an early lead. However, Punahou bolted ahead with a 14-4 run. Inside shots by Buckner and Johnson gave Punahou a 17-9 lead early in the second quarter.

Back-to-back 3-point bombs by Jaris Poaca-Falefa brought the Crusaders within 19-17 midway through the second quarter, but Saint Louis never got any closer.

Punahou closed out the half with a 6-2 run, then extended the lead to 46-23 near the end of the third quarter. Punahou's halfcourt man defense and fullcourt pressure wore the Crusaders down; Saint Louis had nine turnovers in the third after committing just four in the first two quarters.

“;We had to go into the half and correct,”; Punahou coach Alika Smith said. “;We're supposed to dictate. I was taught that you might have a bad day on offense, but you control your defense.”;
