Fine art in fiber
POSTED: Sunday, January 24, 2010
One of the most dynamic juried shows in Hawaii, the biennial Fiber Hawaii exhibit is notable for challenging artists to expand the parameters of contemporary fiber art. “;Crossing Boundaries,”; the 2010 theme, furthers that intention.
Juror Carole Beadle, professor in textile arts at the California College of the Arts, selected works by artists from Kauai, the Big Island and Maui, as well as Oahu. One hundred pieces were submitted by 45 artists; Beadle selected 57 works by 35 artists.

“;The art presented in Fiber Hawaii 2010 offers its viewers extensive diversity in fiber media,”; Beadle wrote in her juror's statement. “;Immerse yourself in examining artists' concerns for our environment in recycled and reused materials, unique fiber forms appropriating ideas from other fine arts and boundaries being moved to new and exciting places.
“;Conceptual issues with social and cultural content are being developed as well as the traditional craft forms re-examined as contemporary fine craft. Hawaii craftsmen are honoring their place in locality, culture and tradition with an open view of the future of fiber arts as it crosses the boundaries with art and life.”;
Hawaii Craftsmen, dedicated to perpetuating fine craft as fine art, has presented Fiber Hawaii since 1982. The organization also conducts such annual events as the Raku Ho'olaulea, Statewide Juried Exhibition and 'Aha Hana Lima lectures and workshops.
