Even after a decorated college career, John Estes feels quite comfortable having to prove himself.

Coming out of St. Mary's (Calif.) High School, Estes' mailbox wasn't exactly stuffed with recruiting letters. He found an opening in Hawaii, and three All-Western Athletic Conference seasons later, Estes is starting the process again as he embarks on his professional career.

The former Warriors center closes a weeklong audition today in the East-West Shrine Game in Orlando, Fla., in hopes of impressing the scouts in attendance.

“;Not that many colleges recruited me because of my measurables and it's kind of the same thing now,”; Estes said in a phone interview yesterday. “;But I have an opportunity at the Shrine game and I feel I did pretty well.”;

Estes will be joined on the West team by Washington defensive lineman and Hawaii Prep graduate Daniel Te'o Nesheim in today's game at the Florida Citrus Bowl. The game will be televised on ESPN2. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. Hawaii time.

Estes and Washington State's Kenny Alfred are the centers on the West roster and are expected to play two quarters each. But much of the impressions for the week were set in the practices leading up to the game.

Estes said he had a solid day on Tuesday, though he was a bit disappointed in losing one of his one-on-one duels. He came back Wednesday to win his one-on-ones and felt solid in pass and run blocking.

“;I've been concentrating on finishing my blocks and getting to the second level,”; Estes said.

“;The practices are equal to or even more important than the game. All the scouts are there and it's full-pads, full-speed every snap. Everybody's fighting for their draft position, so it's going to get intense.”;

After specializing in shotgun snaps in triggering UH's run-and-shoot offense for four years, he estimated 90 percent of the plays he ran this week were from under center.

“;It's a lot easier,”; Estes said. “;I can get out of the blocks so much faster.”;

Estes, named UH's most valuable player last season, started all 54 games in his UH career and took a brief break between the end of the Warriors' season and his preparation for the pros. After graduating with a degree in communication, he spent a week at home in Stockton, then headed to Athletes' Performance in Carson, Calif., to train for the Shrine game and the opportunities to follow.

The 6-foot-1 Estes weighed in at 295 for the Shrine game and is working to get back up to 305.

He's hoping a strong showing this week will lead to an invitation to the NFL Combine. He also plans on working out for the scouts at UH's pro day.

Biesemeyer back on UH staff

Ryan Biesemeyer will return to the UH football program as a graduate assistant, the school announced yesterday.

Biesemeyer was the team's video coordinator in 2008. He spent this past season coaching the defensive line at Texas Lutheran. Biesemeyer joins Inoke Funaki as the Warriors' graduate assistants this season.

Prior to his stint at UH, Biesemeyer was a GA at Delta State and an assistant coach at California Lutheran, working with UH defensive line coach Dave Aranda at both schools.
