Kaiser stays in playoff picture

By

POSTED: Saturday, January 23, 2010

The Kaiser Cougars picked the right time to play their best game of the season.

Needing a win to stay in the playoff hunt, Kaiser got 12 points and six rebounds from Preston Wuich in a 41-32 win over Kaimuki last night at Kalaheo's gym.

Wuich, a sophomore, helped Kaiser hold its ground after it took a 26-12 halftime lead. His twin brother, Justin, suffered an arm injury during a fall in the third quarter, but returned to help Kaiser improve to 3-6 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East play.

“;This helps us in case we end up in a tie with Farrington,”; Kaiser coach Ivan Tamura said.

The Cougars host Farrington on Monday in a key matchup.

Kaimuki dropped to 4-4 (9-11 overall) after struggling to get open shots against a tough Kaiser man-to-man defense. The Bulldogs, technically the home team, shot 28 percent (13-for-46), including 3-for-19 from long range.

“;Basically, I'm happiest that we were moving our feet, not just our hands,”; Tamura said.

The win was a nice turnaround for Kaiser, which lost to Kaimuki 44-35 on Jan. 2.

Gabriel Stietzel led Kaimuki with 20 points, but no other Bulldog managed more than six.

Kaiser was bolstered by smooth ball movement by Mark Guiguis, Quinton Wong and David Morton. Center Ronson Hill added six points and eight rebounds.

Kaiser dominated the battle on the boards 34-19.

“;I thought our boys would be nervous playing on TV for the first time. We have a young team,”; Tamura added.

Kaiser began to zoom ahead late in the first quarter, opening a 14-10 lead and extending it to a 14-point cushion by halftime.

Kaimuki dropped its zone and used a man defense to cause nine third-quarter turnovers by Kaiser, but continued to struggle offensively. The Bulldogs got no closer than eight points in the second half.
