Man now in custody allegedly entered home

A 34-year-old Manoa man discovered a burglar when he got home Thursday night.

Police arrested a man, also 34, who allegedly burglarized the house.

The resident had arrived home at about 7:10 p.m. to find the suspect inside. He called police, and officers found the suspect still inside the home. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary.

 

Waianae High student targeted in large brawl

A 17-year-old Waianae High School student was knocked out during a fight involving about 200 Waianae High students yesterday afternoon, police said.

The teen, who was not taken to the hospital, had been released about a week ago from the juvenile detention center for assaults and appeared to be the target in the fight, police said.

The affray had erupted at about 3:10 p.m. and spilled over onto Farrington Highway and Ala Akau Street, lasting for about 15 to 20 minutes. Police offices broke up the fight at about 3:30 p.m. Police made no arrests.

 

Teenage victim of crash on Big Island identified

Big Island police identified yesterday the 17-year-old Pahoa boy who died Wednesday from injuries in a two-vehicle crash as Gary A. Gonsalves Jr.

The crash occurred at about 6:50 p.m. Tuesday on Kahakai Boulevard north of Punawai Street in Hawaiian Beaches.

Police said a 74-year-old man driving a pickup truck crossed the center line and hit the boy's oncoming Subaru sedan. Authorities flew the boy to the Queen's Medical Center, where he died at 2:02 a.m. Wednesday. The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center.

A 19-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy also in the pickup truck were not injured.

Gonsalves is the fifth traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with one at this time last year.
