Victorino gets three-year deal
PHILADELPHIA » A person familiar with negotiations says the Philadelphia Phillies and All-Star center fielder Shane Victorino have agreed to a $22 million, three-year contract.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn't been announced. Victorino, a Maui native, was eligible for arbitration.
Victorino hit .292 with 39 doubles, 13 triples, 10 home runs, 62 RBIs and 25 stolen bases for the NL champions last season. He won his second consecutive Gold Glove.
Rainbow Wahine fall at LaTech
Allie Patterson came off the bench for a game-high 18 points, but it wasn't enough as the Hawaii women's basketball team lost to Louisiana Tech 75-62 in a Western Athletic Conference game at the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston, La., yesterday.
Dita Liepkalne hit three 3-pointers en route to 15 points for the Rainbow Wahine (8-11, 2-4 WAC).
The Lady Techsters (12-4, 3-1) were led by Shanavia Dowdell (14 points, 16 rebounds) and Adrienne Johnson (16 points, 11 rebounds).
Hawaii, outrebounded 49-27, continues the road trip at Boise State tomorrow.
Island's Murphy Gatorade winner
Island School junior Pierce Murphy was named the Gatorade boys cross country runner of the year for Hawaii yesterday.
Murphy, the Kauai Interscholastic Federation champion, finished third at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association championship meet. He was second among Hawaii runners at the Foot Locker West Regional last fall.
WAC basketball tickets on sale
All-session tickets for the Western Athletic Conference basketball tournament in Reno, Nev., are on sale through host Nevada.
The men's and women's tournaments will be held March 10-13 at the Lawlor Events Center. The all-session tickets are good for both tournaments, with prices ranging from $55 (student) to $195 (lower bowl).
Single-session tickets range from $20 to $55 for the men's games and are $15 for women's games.
Fans wishing to sit in the Hawaii section must order through the UH ticket office (944-2697).
