Pale big for Rough Riders

By

POSTED: Thursday, January 21, 2010

Kaipo Pale's work on the boards was something to behold.

“;I've never seen anyone rebound as much as Kaipo did tonight,”; Steve Hathaway said after his Roosevelt boys broke open a see-saw battle in the third quarter for a 53-43 win over Kalani last night.

Pale, a 6-foot-3 senior, had 19 points and 25 rebounds, including 11 grabs on the offensive glass. Several of those caroms were sheer hustle, with the lanky center slipping away from defenders from one side of the key to the other before the ball even hit iron.

Eighth-ranked Roosevelt (10-4) improved to 4-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference. Kalani dropped to 2-2.

Brendan Nakatani, a 6-1 junior, added 14 points and four steals for Roosevelt. He connected on 10 of his 14 free-throw attempts.

“;The game plan was for Kaipo, but Nakatani, he really was the catalyst,”; Kalani coach Nathan Davis said. “;He really stepped up.”;

Pale's grit helped on a cold shooting night when both teams struggled from the perimeter. Kalani's 2-3 zone did what it could against Pale, who was 6-for-12 from the field and not a focal point of the attack.

Tatsuya Ono had eight points to pace Kalani, which shot 23 percent (13-for-56) against Roosevelt's mix of zone and man defenses.

“;I think the pace of the game was getting to their shooters,”; Hathaway said. “;They penetrate and move the ball well, but a lot of their shots were flat. We were lucky.”;

Davis agreed.

“;We got caught up in their style of play,”; he said.

Angelo Berardy had a team-high 10 rebounds and three steals.

The visiting Falcons were fairly efficient in halfcourt sets, but struggled at times against Roosevelt's fullcourt press; they were whistled for 10-second violations twice.

Still, they were in the game into the third quarter. A technical foul against Roosevelt's bench as the first half ended gave Kalani two free throws to start the second half, and after Bryson Yorita drilled a 3-pointer from the corner, the game was tied at 26 with 5:42 left in the third quarter.

Kalani then went cold, scoring just one basket in the next 6 minutes. Pale's block, rebound and outlet pass to Agaese Tago for a layup gave Roosevelt a 32-28 lead to close the third quarter.

Roosevelt switched to a 2-3 zone and went on a run after Pale scored inside twice and Brandon Mitchell drove for a three-point play. Nakatani sank six foul shots to give the Rough Riders a 45-32 lead with 2:05 remaining.

“;We needed to hit from the perimeter and get more contact going to the basket,”; said Davis, whose team finished 13-for-20 from the foul line.

Roosevelt was 25-for-42 from the line (60 percent) and owned a 46-27 edge on the boards.
