Man dies after being hit by driver going wrong way

A longtime Outrigger Hotels employee died Monday after being hit by a suspected drunken driver who was going the wrong way on a one-way street in Waikiki.
Ray Kanemori, 61, of Ahuimanu had just completed his shift and was walking to his car in a hotel parking lot when he was hit at about 11:20 p.m., said his wife, Camille.
Police arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of negligent homicide and driving under the influence of an intoxicant. He was later released pending investigation.
Kanemori was a guest services manager at Outrigger Hotels & Resorts.
Barry Wallace, executive vice president of hospitality services for Outrigger Enterprises Group, said in a written statement, “;All of us at Outrigger mourn the loss of Ray Kanemori, a 36-year employee of our company and much beloved member of our ohana. Our hearts go out to his wife and their family during this difficult time.”;
“;Ray was a valuable member of our team, and we shall miss his warmth, genuine aloha spirit, and his willingness to always help others,”; Wallace added.
“;Our employees will miss Ray very much. However, his genuine spirit of aloha to both employees and guests will be a legacy that the Outrigger ohana will cherish forever,”; Wallace said.
Kanemori started with Outrigger in 1973. Camille Kanemori said her husband started working at the Outrigger while they both were attending college.
She said her husband loved to golf and had served as a Boy Scout leader, and baseball and soccer coach for the couple's two sons, Tyler, 21, and Brian 18.
Police said the suspect, driving a 2005 white Chevrolet Impala sedan, was driving mauka-bound on Walina Street, which is one-way going makai, near Kuhio Avenue when he hit Kanemori.
Kanemori was taken in critical condition to the Queen's Medical Center, where he later died.
Funeral services are pending.
This was Oahu's fourth pedestrian death this year and the fifth traffic fatality overall.
» On Thursday, Yui Tung Ng, 73, of Kukui Gardens was hit by a car as he crossed North Vineyard Boulevard at Aala Street near Chinatown, and died a day later at a local hospital.
» On Jan. 12, Hideno T. Matsumoto, 81, of Nuuanu died after being hit by a car while crossing Pali Highway near Dowsett Avenue.
» On Jan. 7, 52-year-old Sachiko Kojima of Tokyo was crossing Kaiolu Street when a van driven by a Waikiki woman turned left from Kuhio Avenue and hit her. Kojima was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died the following day from head injuries.
Hawaii leads the nation in elderly pedestrian fatalities, with a rate of 6.97 deaths per 100,000 for people 65 years and older in 2007-2008, according to AARP. The national rate was 2.33 deaths per 100,000 people.
