Hawaii rebounds to conquer Pacific in 4 sets

POSTED: Wednesday, January 20, 2010

A long time coming.

No. 9 Hawaii won its first road match since its 2008 finale last night, wearing down host Pacific 27-30, 33-31, 30-25, 30-22 for the Warriors' first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball victory of the season in Stockton, Calif.

Freshman opposite Jonas Umlauft had a season-high 21 kills and junior hitter Joshua Walker added 17 for Hawaii (3-3, 1-2) in the 150-minute win that snapped UH's losing streak on the road. Senior middle Matt Rawson had 10 kills for the Warriors, who had not won on the road since defeating Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif., in 2008, a streak of 12 straight.

“;This continues to validate everything that we're doing,”; first-year Warriors coach Charlie Wade said. “;Any win on the road is a good win. Those have been elusive.

“;I thought we served good, passed good, and were more disciplined on defense. As I told the team, we need to evolve, need to get better at executing what we want. I thought we did that, especially at the end of the match.”;

Hawaii will get another shot at its evolution in today's rematch (4 p.m. Hawaii time) at the Spanos Center against Pacific (4-3, 0-3).

After dropping the first set — in which the Warriors let an early 11-6 lead slip away — Hawaii regrouped and got a better handle on two of UOP's most effective players.

Freshman Taylor Hughes and sophomore transfer Florian Gornik both finished with 23 kills. Hughes had 17 kills and Gornik 12 as the Tigers eked out the win.

“;I thought we did a pretty good job on them after that,”; Wade said. “;Hughes was hitting close to .600 against us (he finished at .386). We made the adjustments we needed to make.

“;We were a little inefficient in the beginning, had some unforced errors when not being able to close out Game 1.”;

The Warriors felt fortunate to be tied at 1-1 after winning Set 2.

Hawaii again jumped out to early leads of 10-7 and 17-12. UH extended its lead to 22-16 as Steven Grgas was in on two huge blocks of Gornick.

A 7-2 run pulled the Tigers to within one at 24-23 and moments later, Sean Daley's ace tied the score at 27.

Two points later, Brennon Dyer gave UH set point but the Tigers responded with a Gornick kill and an Umlauft hitting error for their first set point. Walker's kill tied it at 30, but Hughes answered for UOP's second set point.

Nicola Vukicevic's service error and Hughes' attack error gave UH set point and the Warriors took advantage when Rawson's kill tied the match at one set apiece.

Hawaii didn't gain control in Set 3 until late, when it broke away from a 22-all tie. A kill by Dyer sparked UH and an ace by Walker sparked a 4-0 run that put the Warriors ahead for good.

Set 4 was tightly contested until 11-11. Two kills by Walker and one by Umlauft gave the Warriors a three-point cushion they needed. Dyer served Hawaii to a 29-21 lead and, one sideout later, Hunt's ninth kill gave the Warriors their first road victory in two years.

Hawaii hit .265 for the match, including .448 in Set 4. The Warriors outblocked the Tigers, 16 to 12 1/2 , with Rawson in on eight and Umlauft five.

Hawaii also won the dig battle 47-43. UH junior setter Nejc Zemljak had 10, and UOP libero Mark Bauhs had a match-high 16.

The Warriors improved on their ace-to-error ratio from the service line, with three aces to 13 errors. The Tigers had five aces to 26 errors.

Hawaii upped its series lead over Pacific to 35-1. The Warriors' lone loss came in 1997 at Spanos.
