Man allegedly assaults 13-year-old
Police are investigating a report of a 21-year-old man who allegedly sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl.
The alleged assault occurred in the Hawaii Kai area.
The victim told police the suspect assaulted her at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Candle causes $80,000 home blaze
A fire caused by an unattended candle damaged a bedroom at a Haleiwa home yesterday.
Firefighters responded at 5:43 a.m. to the blaze at the two-bedroom, two-story home at 66-073 Wana Place.
Apparently, the candle was left burning on top of a dresser.
The candle burned down to the base, creating a pool of wax. The heat buildup radiated to the dresser, starting the fire, said Capt. Terry Seelig, spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department.
Firefighters had the blaze under control at 5:58 a.m. and extinguished at 7:07 a.m.
Damage is estimated at $80,000 to the structure and its contents.
Two residents escaped the fire. One person suffered minor burns to the hands after trying to control the fire with a garden hose. The resident refused treatment.
Seelig cautioned residents never to leave a candle unattended. Also, do not allow a candle to burn all the way to the bottom because the pool of wax can be ignited by the wick and can cause a large fire.
