Stubborn Big Island fire still burning

Fire crews battling a stubborn brush fire mauka of Kealakekua on the Big Island continued putting out hot spots and occasional flare-ups yesterday, said Hawaii County Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira.

The fire has burned for several weeks and has shrouded the area with smoke. The smoke problem is compounded by light winds.

Oliveira said the fire situation is improving, but residents might still experience varying smoke conditions, depending on wind patterns.
