Warriors go long distance

By

POSTED: Sunday, January 17, 2010

The Kamehameha boys basketball team had a great shootaround early yesterday in preparation for the evening's Interscholastic League of Honolulu matchup against Saint Louis. The Warriors shooters felt comfortable in McCabe Gym, and once the ball was officially tipped later that night, they made themselves right at home on Saint Louis' home court.

The No. 3-ranked Warriors nailed nine of 12 3-pointers and stymied Saint Louis with their trademark high-energy, trapping defense en route to a 67-41 thumping last night. Playing yet again without 6-foot-5 star Micah Christenson, who was on the mainland yet again for volleyball tournament, Kamehameha (13-3 overall, 3-1 ILH) proved the depth and balance of this defending Division I state championship squad.

“;Micah's our go-to guy,”; said junior guard Frank Ho, who made four 3s and finished with 12 points, “;but because he's not here, someone else has to step up.”;

Junior forward Charlton Tang came off the bench to lead all scorers with 16 points. And five Warriors hit at least one 3-pointer. Saint Louis sophomore Acen Cabral led his team with 12 points.

With Christenson on the mainland for a volleyball tournament, Kamehameha lost a 57-46 battle to 'Iolani in the Na Menehune Holiday Classic championship game on Dec. 30. With Christenson in uniform and scoring a team-high 19 points, Kamehameha topped second-ranked 'Iolani 49-47 on Tuesday in an intense matchup.

But against Saint Louis, which has yet to win an ILH regular-season game in three tries so far this season, the Warriors' pinpoint outside shooting overcame their sloppy play early to pull away with an easy win. Four 3-pointers—two by Ho and one each from junior guards Shane Matayoshi and Brandon Orpillia—in a 2-minute stretch pushed what had been a tied game into a double-digit lead that Kamehameha never relinquished.

Kamehameha's free-flowing, attacking offense predicated on dribble drives found good looks for its shooters. The Warriors exploded for 46 first-half points, just one 3-pointer shy of its four-quarter total in Tuesday's win over 'Iolani.

“;Today was just our day,”; Ho said. “;Everything was falling.”;
