Punahou strikes back

POSTED: Sunday, January 17, 2010

So much for the home court.

For the second time in as many matchups between Punahou and Mid-Pacific, the visitors won.

Punahou got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Hailey-Ann Maeda, and a backcourt led by Mysha Sataraka sparked a 58-39 win over Mid-Pacific at Mills Gym last night.

The game was fairly close until the Buffanblu pulled away midway through the fourth quarter, turning a seven-point lead into a 15-point cushion in less than 3 minutes.

Fourth-ranked Punahou (8-5), which lost its Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener to Mid-Pacific 34-31 in overtime on Dec. 29, is now 5-1 in the league.

“;We watched the tape and we didn't really have energy,”; Maeda said of the first matchup. “;We blocked out a lot more this time.”;

Punahou had a 39-23 edge on the boards last night, pulling down 13 caroms on the offensive glass.

“;We figured out what we did wrong last time. Our intensity wasn't always up and we weren't finishing shots,”; said Sataraka, who had 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds with just one turnover.

The Buffanblu can take sole possession of first place with a win over 'Iolani on Tuesday.

Third-ranked Mid-Pacific suffered its second loss in a row after starting ILH play with three wins. Keaton McFadden had 11 points and 11 boards, and Jenna Savusa managed seven points and five caroms playing on a bruised knee. Guard Ashley Yamachika had eight points.

Punahou's swarming man-to-man defense limited the Owls to 26 percent shooting (12-for-46) and forced 19 turnovers.

It was a turnaround from the first meeting, when Punahou's offense was clunky, with only six assists and 11 turnovers. Last night, the Buffanblu had 14 assists with just seven giveaways.

Sataraka directed an offense that is much more fluid now.

“;When Mysha's strong and aggressive with the ball, she can see the floor,”; Punahou coach Mike Taylor said.

Brittnie Lau, one of just two seniors on the roster, added 11 points, and freshman Khaliyah Thompson added 10 points, six boards and three assists off the bench. Thompson hit six foul shots in the final quarter as Punahou put the game away.

Punahou, which didn't make a free throw for three quarters, was 11-for-18 from the line in the fourth.

Both teams came out in tough man-to-man defenses, but it was Punahou that surged ahead midway through the first half. Maeda, a junior, scored six points during an 18-5 run. Sataraka's drive through the paint gave Punahou a 22-13 lead.

MPI closed within 24-23 on Yamachika's steal and layup late in the first half, but Punahou scored the final four points before the break and extended the lead to 39-28 on Janet Li's hustling putback midway through the third quarter.

The Owls used full-court pressure to chip the lead down to seven with free throws by Savusa, Kiana Robertson and Yamachika, but turnovers and a lack of touches on the low post slowed progress.

Punahou put the game out of reach with an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter.
