Farrington girls team forfeits contest
POSTED: Sunday, January 17, 2010
The Farrington girls basketball team took a loss for the first time in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red season, and it was by forfeit.
Farrington was scheduled to play Roosevelt last night, but the Govs elected to suspend all of their players following a postgame incident at Castle on Friday night.
That leaves Farrington (10-1) tied with Roosevelt (10-1) for the Red East lead.
Farrington had finished up a 65-50 win at Castle and both teams were shaking hands when, according to witnesses, Farrington's Lucky Crichton and Castle's Nicole Aberilla got into a skirmish.
Castle coach Jeff McKeown and administrators suspended Aberilla for one game. Farrington administrators suspended Crichton for the matchup with Roosevelt.
“;All we have are eyewitness accounts,”; said Farrington athletic director Harold Tanaka, who was at another athletic event that night. “;Punches were thrown. Our girl was suspended. We're taking care of our side.”;
Without further investigation—which will continue tomorrow—Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu felt it wasn't fair to sit Crichton.
The coach had all of her players sit out with Crichton in a show of solidarity, even if it meant forfeiting the game.
“;We don't condemn what our player did. Whoever threw the first punch, the other was still wrong for retaliating, but a suspension without finding out all the facts is unfair,”; Tatupu said.
Roosevelt, which had lost at Farrington eight days earlier, wanted to play.
“;It's unfortunate because our girls were looking forward to this game,”; Rough Riders coach Hinano Higa said.
