About 300 Kaiser Permanente Hawaii physicians and staff members will get their hands dirty tomorrow for a good cause.

Many will be doing

gardening and other community projects in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

On Oahu, they will work with 'AINA in Schools, a Kokua Hawaii Foundation program that tries to guide children toward a healthier future through knowledge of the land, water and food.

The Kaiser team will prepare soil for plantings at the Waikiki Elementary School garden.

On the Big Island, Kaiser physicians and staff members will work with the Hawaii Island School Garden Network, which encourages Big Island schools to increase consumption of locally grown foods through sustainable food production.

They will volunteer at Ka Umeke Kaeo Charter School in Hilo and Waimea Middle and Kahakai Elementary schools in Kailua-Kona, weeding, pruning and planting crops in the school gardens.

The 'AINA in Schools Program promotes healthy school lunches with locally grown produce, nutrition education, agricultural field trips, waste reduction and community outreach.

Nancy Redfeather, director of the Hawaii Island School Garden Network, said it is “;pleased to work with Kaiser Permanente in creating this tremendous community service and learning opportunity.”;
