Palmer stays in position to win

By

POSTED: Saturday, January 16, 2010

Ryan Palmer tries hard to wake up in a new golf world every day.

When he began the second round of the $5.5 million Sony Open in Hawaii, the man who was one of six to share the 18-hole lead didn't tell himself he needed this many birdies to stay there. He didn't have a number in mind or even think about being in the final group come Saturday.

But that's exactly where Palmer finds himself after shooting a 4-under 66 yesterday for a 36-hole total of 9-under 131. It leaves him one shot clear of close friend Chad Campbell (64—132), Australian Robert Allenby (67—132) and defending champion Zach Johnson (67—132), who overcame a triple bogey at the par-3 17th.

World No. 3 Steve Stricker (67—133) is another shot back, tied for fifth with John Merrick (68—133) and Jeff Quinney (67—133). Davis Love III (69) is part of a foursome that's tied for eighth at 6-under 134.

“;I was even par, that's all I thought about today,”; Palmer said. “;It was the only round I cared about. You come out after a good round, you want to stay up there. If you get loose and somebody gets in the lead and you start thinking about it, and you want to be up there, and that's when you start pressuring yourself.”;

Palmer is a graduate of Texas A&M and a member of The Colonial golf course in Fort Worth, Texas. As Campbell has said in the past, the 18 holes there are similar to the ones here, something that should help both today in the first full-field event on the PGA Tour.

“;This course is old school, all dog legs,”; Palmer said. “;It probably helps me a little playing Colonial as much as I do. I'm able to see a lot more shots on this golf course, as I do at Colonial.”;

Campbell has been a fixture here for years. He often finds one round where he goes low, but hasn't been consistent enough to get a win. In eight previous appearances, Campbell has a tie for second in 2006 and a tie for 10th in 2008. Last year, he was on his way to Hawaii when he realized he forgot to call the tournament to let officials know he was coming. He had to turn around and go home.

“;Obviously, I was very disappointed, especially because I love coming here and playing the tournament, playing the golf course. It's one of my favorites,”; Campbell said. “;I had plenty of reminders this offseason.”;

A strong offseason was the main reason Allenby came all the way from Florida. He sprained his ankle on Monday, but instead of going back to the hotel with his wife, he kept walking—as he jokingly said, “;All the way to Diamond Head Crater.”;

Upon returning to the hotel, he took off his shoe and the ankle ballooned, leaving him wondering if he would be able to play. Allenby has been forced into some swing alterations, especially off the tee, but he has compensated well enough to remain in contention. The ankle hurts, and it's annoying for the talented Aussie looking for his first tour win since 2001, but he wouldn't be swinging this weekend if he didn't think he had a chance to win.

“;It's a bit frustrating because I know I'm playing really well,”; Allenby said. “;I just can't do what I really want to do and hit the ball the way I want to hit it. I'm not expecting too much, just managing my way around the golf course.”;

Johnson managed to remain on the top page of the leaderboard, despite a triple bogey and a bogey over the course of three holes. But instead of calling it a day, Johnson birdied four of the remaining eight to be in contention come the weekend.

“;It's one hole,”; Johnson said of the dreaded 17th. “;There are 17 other holes. Today was good. There were a lot of positives. Certainly finishing with birdie, birdie after that hiccup in the middle of the round, it was nice.”;

As for Palmer, he wants to go off late tomorrow so he can watch his beloved Dallas Cowboys play the Minnesota Vikings. The game begins at 8 a.m. Hawaii time, so if he goes low today, he'll get to watch the game. There's also the matter of getting his third tour win. And that's motivation enough.

“;I'm not going to sit here and say, I'm not going to think about being in the lead, no way,”; Palmer said. “;Who doesn't think about it when they tee off on Saturday, final group, so it will be there. i just keep the same mind-set. I'm even par.”;
