4 suspects are victims of a misunderstanding

Four men arrested on burglary charges Thursday night were released from police custody after a mix-up was cleared up at a former auto dealership on Beretania Street.

At about 8 p.m. officers were dispatched to a report of suspicious circumstances at 1234 Beretania St., the former Pfleuger auto dealership, police said.

The caller, who works at the site, met with a responding officer and reported seeing men inside the building.

Officers entered and found four men — ages 42, 45, 48 and 73 — who were arrested on suspicion of second-degree burglary.

After the arrest, officers confirmed that the men had been hired to remove some items in the building, but the caller had not been informed of the arrangement.

Police released the men and the complaint was withdrawn.

Big Island residents warned of repair scam

Big Island police are warning the public about an automobile repair scam.

Police said an unidentified man approached a South Kohala man in a shopping center parking lot, said that he saw the victim's car tire wobbling and offered to fix it for a fee.

The two went to the victim's home, and the suspect left with the car. The suspect returned a short time later saying he fixed it and demanded $4,000 in cash, police said.

Police advise the public to take their vehicles to licensed auto repair technicians.
