8 million watch DHC on ESPN2
The three ESPN2-televised games of the inaugural Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic reached more than 8 million people, according to the event's executive director David A.K. Matlin.
The estimate of 8,209,000 is unduplicated, meaning people were not counted again if they tuned in to more than one of the games televised on Dec. 23 and 25.
“;We're very happy with the number,”; Matlin said. “;It's great promotion for Hawaii, as well as (UH) and the Diamond Head Classic.”;
Hawaii played in two of the ESPN2 games—a semifinal loss to UNLV and a loss in the third-place game to Saint Mary's.
Wahine dominate all-decade team
Just as it dominated conference volleyball play the past 10 years, Hawaii dominated the selections on the Western Athletic Conference all-decade team.
The Rainbow Wahine claimed all six spots on the team voted upon via an online ballot, with three-time WAC player of the year Kim Willoughby (2000-03) receiving 715 votes out of the nearly 1,000 cast.
Willoughby, a three-time All-American, was the AVCA national player of the year in 2003 and is the WAC career kills leader.
Second in the voting with 696 votes was setter Kanoe Kamana'o (2003-07), a four-time All-America honoree and UH's all-time assist leader.
Also named to the team were hitter Lily Kahumoku (1999-2003), a two-time All-American and 2000 WAC player of the year; hitter Jamie Houston (2005-08), a three-time WAC player of the year and two-time All-America honoree; hitter Kanani Danielson (2008-09), the defending WAC player of the year and two-time All-America honoree; and hitter Aneli Cubi-Otineru (2007-09), a three-time All-WAC selection and third-team All-American this past season.
