Akina's 3 keeps Kahuku undefeated

The Kahuku Red Raiders dared Moanalua to bust their zone.

The gamble paid off, as the home team shot just 3-for-17 from the arc, and seventh-ranked Kahuku escaped with a 58-53 win over Moanalua last night at Na Menehune's gym.

Kahuku improved to 5-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East, handing Moanalua its first league loss after four wins.

The Red Raiders (8-5 overall) got clutch play on offense, including a ridiculous, hanging-in-midair 3-point rainbow by Nehoa Akina with 48 seconds left. It was the sixth trey for Akina, who scored 26 points. That shot, over the outstretched hands of two Moanalua defenders, gave Kahuku a 55-53 lead with 48 seconds left.

“;His hand was higher than my shot,”; Akina said of the first defender. “;He was flying by me and I just tried to throw it up. I was surprised it went in.”;

After Moanalua freshman Marcus Keene missed the front of a one-and-one, Akina sank two foul shots for a 57-53 Red Raiders lead with 27 seconds remaining.

Marcus Monroe and Kevin Amaral missed 3-point shots in the final seconds, and Kahuku point guard Galeai “;Mua”; Malufau hit a foul shot with 8 seconds left to close out the scoring.

Moanalua played well enough to win against most teams, but couldn't overcome Kahuku's size and execution.

“;He's a great shooter. We had two guys on him and he still hits it,”; coach Greg Tacon said of Akina.

Moanalua never recovered from Akina's clutch bomb, missing a key free throw and a couple of 3-point tries down the stretch.

“;The way we're running our defense, guys are trusting each other,”; Kahuku coach Hiram Akina said. “;Everybody, including the guys on the bench, all stepped up.”;

Kahuku has another key matchup with Kalaheo tomorrow. Moanalua will host Kaiser.

“;We battled well and handled some adversity,”; Tacon said. “;We got some great looks. First half, we just weren't hitting.”;

Monroe and Keene finished with 12 points each for Moanalua (10-5 overall), which forced Kahuku into 16 turnovers. Moanalua had just eight.

Kahuku has won the last four meetings with Moanalua, which last beat the Red Raiders two years ago.

Kahuku used 2-3 and 1-3-1 zones, and while Moanalua was cold from the perimeter, the Red Raiders claimed a 31-20 edge on the boards. Shairone Thompson, a 6-foot-4 junior, had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

“;I feel great. It's a preview to an OIA championship game,”; the two-sport athlete said. “;This was so intense. Their crowd was into it.”;

Kahuku got a steady game from Malufau, who had eight points and six assists.
