Experts deem accused killer fit for trial

HILO » A hearing has been scheduled to determine whether a Big Island man is fit to stand trial in the rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl.

A psychiatrist and two psychologists have filed reports with the Circuit Court finding 30-year-old Anthony Poulin fit to proceed. The Feb. 19 hearing on those reports was requested by his court-appointed attorney, Stanton Oshiro.

Poulin is accused of sexually assaulting and then drowning his live-in girlfriend's daughter in September. Javieanne Win was in Poulin's care while her mother, Jennifer Abiley, was at work.

Poulin has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, abuse of a family/household member and two counts of first-degree sexual assault. He remains in the Hawaii Community Correctional Center, unable to post $1 million bail.

Ex-boyfriend arrested in suspected arson

Police arrested a 26-year-old Kaneohe man who allegedly set fire to his ex-girlfriend's rented house.

Police said the man and the 24-year-old woman had been in a long relationship and broke up on Monday.

The woman had put all of the man's belongings on a table in the home and waited outside while he moved his things into his vehicle, police said.

When he was done, he told the woman he would make one final check and went back inside.

The man came out, leaving the door open. Police said the woman saw flames and smoke coming from the back bedroom.

The man fled but turned himself in later. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson.
