Roosevelt fends off Moanalua

The stars were aligned for a surprise, but the Roosevelt Rough Riders weren't interested in drama.
Eighth-ranked Roosevelt relied on defense, collecting 19 steals to rally past Moanalua 44-32 last night at the Rough Riders' gym.
Roosevelt improved to 9-1 in Oahu Interscholastic Association play (12-3 overall) despite playing without sharpshooter Nicole Ramirez (ankle).
“;She's a big part of our team, but we have girls who can come off the bench and contribute, and that showed tonight,”; Roosevelt coach Hinano Higa said. “;We had a lot of energy, excitement and intensity.”;
Moanalua dropped to 5-5 in league play (8-8 overall) despite limiting Roosevelt's season-long leading scorer, Mikela Thoemmes, to no points on four shot attempts in the first half.
Thoemmes finished with 10 points and hauled in 15 rebounds. Senior guard Kelcie Namba led Roosevelt with 14 points and sophomore Shana Kawakami had 11 points, mostly on tough drives.
Sophomore Jasmine Funtanilla led Moanalua with seven points. Joanna Nicolas had six points and eight boards, Meleane Smith tallied six points and six rebounds, and A.J. Verdida scored six points.
Na Menehune double- and triple- teamed Thoemmes from the start, crowding the high post while offering Roosevelt open shots from the arc. The home team missed all six 3-point tries in the opening quarter, but led 6-5 entering the second.
After a layup by Smith, Moanalua led 7-6 early in the second quarter, the last time the visitors had a lead.
Namba swished back-to-back rainbow 3-pointers from the wing to spark a 20-2 Rough Riders run. Roosevelt led 16-9 at intermission and opened the lead to 26-9 midway through the third quarter.
“;When we hit from the outside, that opened up the post,”; Higa said.
Thoemmes turned two steals into coast-to-coast layups and had eight points in the third.
Na Menehune chipped away and got within 34-26 after a baseline jumper by Verdida and a pair of foul shots by Nicolas with 5:04 left. Moanalua got no closer.
Roosevelt shot 6-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final 1:15 to ice the game.
Moanalua fared better this time than it did three weeks ago in a 58-31 loss to Roosevelt. Thoemmes scored a season-high 35 points in that battle.
“;It was all man (defense). We just wanted to make it difficult for her,”; Moanalua coach Kristie Morikawa said, crediting post defenders like Jaidon Rego, Funtanilla and Verdida. “;After that last game, I challenged them to stop her. At the half, I was super proud of them.”;
Morikawa liked her backcourt's offensive aggression in the final quarter.
“;I wish they would always play like that. In the beginning, our guards didn't run the offense. It's called the 'Twilight Zone.' They're young and it didn't click until the end. That's been our MO sometimes.”;
Moanalua shot 28 percent from the field (12-for-43) and missed all six shots from the arc.
Roosevelt was 34 percent from the field (16-for-47) and lost the battle on the boards 32-27. The Rough Riders host OIA Red East leader Farrington on Saturday.
