Police arrest man for arson of girlfriend's home

Police arrested a 26-year-old Kaneohe man who allegedly set fire to his ex-girlfriend's rented house.

Police said the man and the 24-year-old woman had been in a long relationship and broke up on Monday.

The woman had put all of the man's belongings on a table in the home and waited outside while he moved his things into his vehicle, police said.

When he was done, he told the woman he would make one final check and went back inside.

The man came out, leaving the door open. Police said the woman saw flames and smoke coming from the back bedroom.

The man fled, but later turned himself in.

He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson.

Hiker who fell to death identified as a soldier

The hiker who fell to his death in Makaha Valley over the weekend was identified as Garland English, 28, of Haleiwa, according to the city Department of the Medical Examiner.

The victim was a Schofield Barracks soldier from the 8th Theater Sustainment Command.

“;Our deepest sympathies go out to the family during this difficult time,”; said Maj. Gen. Michael J. Terry, commanding general of the 8th Theater Sustainment Command.

On Sunday, English fell as he and a fellow hiker rappelled down a steep ridge to retrieve a tent they had earlier lost. Firefighters picked up the second hiker from the trail.

Poor weather conditions and visibility hampered firefighters' efforts to recover English on Sunday. He was spotted several hundred feet below the spot from where he was last seen. Firefighters recovered his body the following day.

English died from multiple blunt force injuries in the accidental fall.

Lihue woman suffers burns in house fire

A Lihue woman was taken to Straub Clinic & Hospital yesterday after she suffered burns to her face and shoulders in a fire that destroyed her home.

The woman suffered burns while helping her mother out of the three-bedroom home on Puanani Street, officials said. At 3:02 a.m., a neighbor called 911 to report the fire. Firefighters arrived at 3:10 a.m. The blaze was under control at 3:30 a.m. and extinguished an hour later.

Damage was estimated at $450,000 to the structure and its contents ,which included two vehicles.

All five occupants of the house, except for the woman who suffered burns, were treated and released for smoke inhalation at Wilcox Memorial Medical Center.

American Red Cross officials said they responded to help the family displaced by the fire.

Kailua-Kona cliff jumper identified by police

The man who has been missing since Monday after jumping off a cliff into the ocean has been identified as Daniel Wright of Kailua-Kona by Big Island police.

Wright, 30, was last seen about 2:30 p.m. Monday. He and another man were jumping into high surf off the “;End of the World”; cliff at the end of Alii Drive. Wright was observed drifting out to sea and treading water.

Big Island fire rescue personnel searched for him again yesterday and found only a pair of swim trunks in 15 feet of water about 100 yards offshore. The search resumes today.

Man arrested in attack that broke wife's jaw

Police arrested a 46-year-old man, with no local address, for allegedly breaking his wife's jaw.

Police said the man allegedly struck the 48-year-old woman at 4 p.m. Monday in Kailua, breaking her jaw.

The woman was taken to the hospital to be treated, police said.

The man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault.
