Get $5 meal deals at Ward Centers

It seems meal deals are a new mall trend, with two Honolulu malls offering specials that are pocketbook- and hunger-friendly.

» Through the end of February, select restaurants at Ward Centers are offering special $5 meal deals.

Participants include Big City Diner, Brian's Hawaiian Kitchen, Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, Diem Cafe, Kakaako Kitchen, Korean BBQ Express, Mr. Egg Roll, Pa'ina Cafe, Panda Express, Satura Cakes, Sushi at Ward, Taco Del Mar, the Wedding Cafe, Wraps & Rolls and Zpizza.

Learn to cook with local produce

; The Malama Learning Center in Kapolei offers a workshop on macrobiotic cooking with locally grown foods, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Kapolei High School.

The specialized diet involves eating a wide variety of fresh foods, organically and in season, and utilizes a variety of simple cooking techniques. Macrobiotic Hawaii's Leslie Ashburn will prepare beet salad over arugula, tempeh collard wraps with creamy tahini sauce and rainbow kale salad.

Resort offers healthful-dining class

It's all about “;fresh beginnings”; at the Kahala Hotel & Resort, where the new year starts with healthful dining.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 23, executive chef Wayne Hirabayashi will lead a class on preparing a variety of wholesome and delicious dishes in a “;Healthy Hawaiian Kitchen”; culinary showcase, which includes lunch. Cost is $50 per person.

The resort is also featuring special menus throughout the month at Hoku's and the Plumeria Beach House:

» Hoku's offers a platter entree featuring an assortment of local and organic vegetables that are steamed, grilled, baked and wok-tossed. $20

» Plumeria Beach House, breakfast, 6:30 to 11 a.m.: Acai bowl, vegetarian egg-white omelet and brown rice served with a special-recipe V12 juice. $15.

» Plumeria Beach House, lunch, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.: Tempeh wrap with soy glaze, brown rice, organic avocado, tomatoes, corn, vege-naise and a choice of acai berry smoothie or flavored Borba water. $15.

» Plumeria Beach House, dinner, 5:30 to 10 p.m.: Grilled or steamed fresh Pacific catch served with local organic vegetables and brown rice. $22.

Hiroshi to feature sakes

Ceremonial sake will be featured Tuesday at Hiroshi in Restaurant Row as part of an aftertaste menu of the restaurant's Eurasian tapas.

Entrees will include long-steamed Kurobuta pork belly, red wine-steamed veal cheek, seared sea scallops and marinated moi “;in bag.”;

The evening's tasting will feature 39 junmai, ginjo and daiginjo sakes, arranged by festival theme. As part of the New Year theme, premium daiginjo labels will be featured, with a feisty Setsubun sake to scare away demons and help ensure a healthy, prosperous new year.

Cherry-blossom season calls for something gay and festive, while at Tanabata festival time, people yearn for something that will “;send us to the stars.”;

Tour visits Waianae farms

In an effort to bring people closer to the food they eat, Kokua Market is organizing a free farm tour in Waianae, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 23.

Sites include Rocky's Farm, Kahumana Farm and Naked Cow Dairy, and lunch at Kahumana's new restaurant.
