Mason qualifies for Sony Open

Former Hawaii-Hilo golfer Nick Mason was among four players to qualify yesterday at the Turtle Bay Resort's Palmer Course for this week's Sony Open at Waialae Country Club.

Canadian Tour member Adam Goldberg shot 9-under 63, PGA Tour veteran Jim Carter shot 64 and Mason and Spencer Levin of the PGA Tour carded 65s to qualify.

Mason joins Kevin Hayashi, T.J. Kua, Parker McLachlin, Dean Wilson and Tadd Fujikawa as golfers in the Sony Open with local ties.

Petrov, Luedi win qualifier

Hawaii Pacific's Nikola Petrov and Daniel Luedi defeated Jeffery Fitch and Daniel Llarenas 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4) yesterday to earn a wild-card entry into the Honolulu Challenger event beginning Jan. 24.
