County, state and federal firefighters battle Kona fire
Firefighters continued battling the 1,800-acre brush fire that has plagued the Kealakekua Mauka area in Kona since Dec. 27.
Personnel from the county fire department, state Division of Forestry and Wildlife, National Park Service and the Army's Pohakuloa Fire Department were working yesterday to put out active burning areas, mop up flare-ups and hot spots, Big Island Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira said.
Landowner Kamehameha Schools' personnel and resources were also part of the firefighting efforts.
Oliveira said that two engines, seven brush tucks, two military off-road vehicles, a 2,000-gallon tanker and a helicopter were used in yesterday's efforts.
Firefighters also deliberately burned vegetation to prevent a runaway fire.
The brush fire does not pose a threat to any structures.
