POSTED: Sunday, January 10, 2010

The 'Iolani Raiders learned something over the weekend: They have the ability to bounce back.

The Raiders girls, routed by Punahou in their Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener on Friday, returned yesterday and outran Kamehameha 57-34 at 'Iolani's gym.

Saphyre Rezentes led the way with 17 points, including three treys in the first half for the fast-breaking Raiders. Guards Lahela Usui (11 points, five steals) and Lori Yamashita (seven points, six steals, four assists) solidified the Raiders' backcourt effort, while freshman Alex Masaquel hustled for 11 rebounds. Ten of those boards were on the offensive glass.

“;We definitely had a lot of fun, especially coming back from (Friday),”; Yamashita said. “;That was a bad loss.”;

“;Everybody came out firing,”; Usui added. “;It's a good feeling.”;

Center Tyana Akana led Kamehameha (0-2) with eight points and seven caroms.

'Iolani's fullcourt press wore down the visitors from the start, and smart skip passes around Kamehameha's 1-2-2 zone yielded open looks for Rezentes. Her second bomb gave 'Iolani a 19-3 lead with 40 seconds left in the opening quarter.

The Warriors answered with a run to pull within 19-10, but the Raiders used their bench to stay fresh and continued to pour pressure on. Rezentes' third trey boosted 'Iolani to a 34-15 lead with less than 3 minutes left in the first half.

Kamehameha got no closer than 17 the rest of the way.

“;Right now, we don't play with a lot of energy,”; Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett said. “;'Iolani is very physical and one of the quickest teams out there.”;

'Iolani shot 38 percent from the field (18-for-48). All five of its 3-pointers came in the first half, and the Raiders added 16-for-23 shooting at the foul line.

Kamehameha shot 24 percent from the field (10-for-41), missing all seven of its 3-point tries. The Warriors were 14-for-22 from the free-throw line.

'Iolani won the battle on the boards 38-25.

Each team committed 26 turnovers.
