'Iolani breezes past Mid-Pacific

By

POSTED: Sunday, January 10, 2010

Perennial powerhouse 'Iolani was ready for prime time.

Mid-Pacific was not.

The Raiders shot just 35 percent from the field, but still managed to dominate the Owls in a 47-21 boys basketball win last night at 'Iolani gym.

Second-ranked 'Iolani (9-5), which also beat Saint Louis on Thursday, improved to 2-0 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play behind 11 points from reserve guard Reid Saito.

The Raiders used man and zone defenses (1-3-1) to stymie the visitors. Mid-Pacific's duo of 6-foot-5 Patrick Matthews and 6-4 Andrew Swanson combined for just one point in the first half. Swanson finished with five points and four rebounds to lead No. 7 MPI (9-5, 0-2), while Matthews had three points and five boards.

Josiah Sukumaran, a rangy 6-3 junior, had five caroms and three blocks to anchor 'Iolani's interior defense.

The 21-point output is a season low for Mid-Pacific (9-5 overall, 0-2 ILH), which opened league play with a loss at Maryknoll on Thursday.

“;I didn't have them ready for Maryknoll. They came to play and we didn't,”; MPI coach Nate Hu said. “;We game-planned for 'Iolani all week, but we didn't execute. Mentally, right now, we're weak. You can tell 'Iolani, mentally, is very strong.”;

Five different players scored in the first quarter as the Raiders zoomed to a 12-2 lead. Point guard Andrew Skalman and forward Jarrett Arakawa drilled 3-pointers over MPI's man defense.

Skalman hit another trey early in the second quarter and the Raiders opened the lead to 17-4. By halftime, MPI had shot just 3-for-19 from the field and had seven turnovers.

'Iolani was just 1-for-10 from beyond the arc in the first half, but had only three giveaways and had a 22-7 lead.

Mid-Pac worked the ball into the low post and Swanson answered with a pair of buckets to bring the Owls within 25-12, but they got no closer.

Saito blazed downcourt for breakaway layups off Mid-Pac turnovers and misses, and the Raiders had a 38-15 lead going into the final quarter.

“;We have quick outlets,”; Saito explained. “;We practice our transition game a lot.”;

'Iolani finished with a 31-22 advantage on the boards while limiting MPI to 22 percent shooting (8-for-37) from the field.

With Kainoa Chu (five points) and Trevyn Tulonghari (two points) cold from the perimeter, Saito's energy was a big help.

“;It takes me a little while to get into the game, but I like it,”; the senior said.

Coach Dean Shimamoto values his reserves, who all play key roles defensively. 'Iolani rarely changes modes or schemes when they enter.

“;Our guys that come off the bench know what to do. Mentally, (Saito) knows what's going on in the game and what we need from him.”;

The win sets up a showdown between 'Iolani and defending ILH and state champion Kamehameha on Tuesday.

“;We are where we wanted to be at this point,”; Shimamoto said, noting that a preseason win over the Warriors came with their top player out of the lineup.

“;Micah (Christenson) wasn't at that game, and he makes a big difference. We're going to do some things to keep him off balance,”; Shimamoto said. “;In the ILH, he's LeBron James.”;
