Late run propels Farrington

By

POSTED: Saturday, January 09, 2010

It wasn't exactly the usual “;B.T.L.”; scoring express, but Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo found other ways to spark Farrington.

The junior guard had seven steals, including two during a pivotal 12-0 second-half run, to go with 17 points as the Lady Governors outlasted Roosevelt 53-50 last night in a matchup of unbeaten titans in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East at noisy Richard Kitamura Fieldhouse.

“;We knew they were going to drive. We wanted this game to come already,”; Tatupu-Leopoldo said after the game, ice wrapped around her left knee.

Down 37-35, Farrington scored 12 points in a row. With Mikela Thoemmes in foul trouble, Sofia Folaumahina scored easily down low to give the Govs a 38-37 lead and they never trailed again. Tatupu-Leopoldo's steal and trey from the corner, plus a steal and layup by Angie Argel, made it 47-37 with 3:30 left.

Roosevelt pulled within 52-50 on a 3-pointer by Thoemmes with 18 seconds left, but Farrington guard Ashley Gravely dribbled off 13 seconds without getting fouled, and Kirsten Liana hit one of two free throws with 4.7 seconds remaining.

Roosevelt sophomore Shana Kawakami got through traffic, but passed up a wide-open 3-point shot that would've tied the game. She dribbled into the lane before passing the ball as time expired.

The No. 4-ranked Lady Govs improved to 8-0 in league play (14-3 overall) despite being outrebounded by the smaller Rough Riders 31-19. The Govs came up with 14 steals, most out of basic halfcourt man-to-man defense. Roosevelt finished with 24 turnovers in all, wasting a 19-point effort by Thoemmes and a 14-point performance by Nicole Ramirez. Point guard Kelcie Namba added 10 points.

“;Our coaches told us to keep our heads up, that we need to keep concentrating and not turn the ball over,”; said Ramirez, who hit all four of her 3-pointers in the first half.

Farrington's depth was a factor. Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu used four reserves for big minutes. Roosevelt used three subs.

Another key was Liana's ballhandling against Roosevelt's high-pressure defense. In addition to Tatupu-Leopoldo, Folaumahina added 11 points and four rebounds.

The visitors jumped to a 9-4 lead after Ramirez hit back-to-back 3-point bombs, but the home team answered with a 15-1 run. Folaumahina's three-point play under the basket gave the Govs a 19-10 lead early in the second quarter.

Thoemmes, who also had 15 rebounds, picked up her second foul before the second quarter and sat for the rest of the half. Roosevelt managed to tie it up at 27-all by shooting 6-for-6 from the field in the quarter.

The Rough Riders took a 31-27 lead on a follow shot by Thoemmes early in the third quarter, but the lead changed hands twice more before Farrington's key run.

“;The girls definitely didn't let up. Roosevelt kept chipping and chipping away at our lead,”; Tatupu said. “;On the boards, it's been one of our weaknesses, losing our man. If we don't play defense, we won't win games.”;

Farrington shot 39 percent from the field (19-for-49), including 3-for-8 from the arc. Roosevelt shot 43 percent (15-for-35), including 7-for-17 from long range. The Rough Riders were 6-for-8 from the arc in the first half and just 1-for-9 after that.

Farrington had just 12 turnovers.
