Glover stays on top on Maui

KAPALUA, Maui >> With the flags limp and the whitecaps that usually dot the Pacific Ocean gone with the wind, the Plantation Course rolled over and played dead during yesterday's second round of the SBS Championship.

The biggest benefactor of the benign conditions was Lucas Glover, who carved out an 8-under 65 to take a three-shot lead over John Rollins entering today's third round of this winners-only event. Glover's two-day total of 15-under 131 put him almost halfway to Ernie Els' amazing course record of 31 under set in 2003.

Most of the 28 golfers wandering the par-73 course designed by Ben Crenshaw couldn't believe their pants legs weren't flapping in the breeze or their hats weren't halfway to Kihei. Not that anyone was complaining.

Only Y.E. Yang shot over par (74), with 15 golfers firing rounds in the 60s on a day that's as rare in these parts as snow in Las Vegas. John Rollins shot a 7-under 66 to sit alone in second at 12-under 134 with defending champion Geoff Ogilvy (66), Sean O'Hair (67), Matt Kuchar (68) and Martin Laird (68) tied for third at 11-under 135.

Today's forecast calls for light winds to swing around to the Kona side, promising even lower scores through the weekend as the world's best take aim in the opening event on the PGA Tour.

“;I was told at breakfast and lunch that nobody has been to Hawaii and had it this calm,”; Glover said. “;I heard three or four guys say that. I said it when I was driving out this morning. It's nice for us. We get to be a little more aggressive and club selection is a lot easier.

“;I wouldn't mind seeing it come up, have some goofy stuff go on just for fun. I'm happy the way it is. We'll see. This course is designed for the wind. I'm not going to say I play great in the wind. I enjoy playing in it. It's a little wrinkle. I'm not wishing for it, but I wouldn't be upset if it came.”;

The conditions were similar in 2003 when Els ran away with the title with a four-day total of 261. He beat K.J. Choi, who set the 18-hole course record that year with a 62, and Rocco Mediate by eight shots. A repeat of that performance seems unlikely, if only because five golfers are within five shots of the lead.

This is also only Glover's second tour of duty of the hilly par-73 course. In 2006, he finished sixth. Whether he can match his 15 under over the weekend is anyone's guess. But should he falter, there are plenty of talented golfers nipping at his spikes, including defending champion Ogilvy, who is also surprised by the lack of wind.

“;I'm sure it's like this all the time, but I've never seen it like this,”; Ogilvy said. “;My first couple of years it was incredible how windy it was. At the moment, it's not quite like that. It's really nice, actually.”;

Ogilvy and Rollins both shot 7 under for their round, with O'Hair and Kenny Perry going 6 under. There were another five golfers who shot 5 under in perfect conditions for a birdie barrage. For the second straight day, the average round was 69 and small-kine change.

“;You kind of come over here with the mind-set that the winds are going to howl,”; Rollins said. “;If you watch it on TV, you are always watching the guys' pants just whipping in the wind and the guys are hitting crazy clubs for short yardages.

“;It seems like it's defensive on every shot when the wind blows like it can. To get two rounds like we've had so far with the weather, it's been fantastic. I think that's part of the reason why the scores have been so low as they are. The greens are soft and the winds are down, so guys are attacking.”;

Or as Perry put it, “;It's going to be a shootout.”;
