No. 1 Kamehameha goes down

By

POSTED: Friday, January 08, 2010

Taylor Crabb scored 12 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer from NBA range with 1:12 left, as No. 3 Punahou stunned top-ranked Kamehameha 48-45 last night at Kekuhaupi'o Gym.

“;Taylor came through,”; Punahou coach Alika Smith said after his team won its Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener.

Sophomore DeForest Buckner had a career night with 13 points and 23 rebounds, nearly outboarding Kamehameha by himself.

“;My dad told me to play big, play strong like Micah (Christenson),”; Buckner said. “;Coach said it's my house. Nobody can come in it.”;

Smith agreed.

“;Everywhere we go, it's his house,”; Smith said of the 6-foot-7 sophomore.

“;We got worked on the boards,”; Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi said of Punahou's 41-24 edge. “;It's a tough loss. We'll see what we're made of. We've got to be resilient. We had an early loss last year.”;

After Crabb's long-range trey, Kamehameha struggled to get an open look against a fast, physical Punahou man-to-man defense. The Buffanblu, switching off on screens to that point, went with senior Henry Cassiday on Christenson, Kamehameha's top scoring threat, for the final 1:12.

“;He said, 'I want (Christenson).' I was caught off-guard by him wanting that, but I had faith in him, and we did just enough as a team,”; Smith said.

Punahou had a foul to give, and Cassiday fouled Christenson on a drive with 12 seconds remaining. On the ensuing inbounds play, Devin Kuhns was alone for a layup, but missed and Buckner came down with the ball. Kuhns tied him up, but the possession arrow pointed to Punahou.

“;We lost 31 (Kuhns). That almost gave me a heart attack,”; Smith said.

Cassiday was fouled on Punahou's inbounds play and calmly hit both ends of a 1-and-1 with 8 seconds to play.

Down 48-45 without a timeout left, Kamehameha got the ball in to Christenson, who was double-teamed at halfcourt and lost the ball. Teammate Shane Matayoshi pounced on it toward the sideline and knifed through two defenders to launch an off-balance 3-pointer on the left wing. Matayoshi's shot missed with 2 seconds left, and though he got his own rebound, there was no time left for another 3-point try.

Punahou celebrated a huge win, though it's just the first game of many on the ILH schedule.

It was the regular-season opener for both teams, which had met exactly four weeks earlier in the final of the James Alegre Invitational. Kamehameha (10-3 overall) rallied in that game for a 58-55 win behind clutch shooting by Christenson, but this time the 6-5 junior didn't get a lot of open looks in the final quarter.

This time, Punahou (11-1) kept its poise down the stretch.

Christenson finished with 10 points, 11 boards and three blocks.

The Buffanblu had a 22-10 lead after Malik Johnson hit a shot in the post with 2:36 left in the first half. Kamehameha scored the final nine points of the half, however, to cut the lead to 22-19 at the break.

The Warriors continued the rally in the third quarter, taking a 29-28 lead on Christenson's trey from the top. That was the first of eight lead changes in the second half.

A 28-foot bank shot for 3 by Branden Orpillia ended the third quarter and gave Kamehameha a 37-34 lead.

With both teams using traps, the lead went back and forth. Dyrbe Enos' drive and left-handed layup against Punahou's giants gave Kamehameha a 43-41 lead with 2:10 left.

Punahou answered with a pass from Johnson to Cassiday for a layup with 1:59 remaining to tie the game.

Christenson's 18-footer off a loose ball gave Kamehameha a 45-43 lead with 1:44 left, but Crabb answered with his second trey of the game and a 46-45 lead.

Punahou shot fairly well in the first quarter, but finished at 35 percent from the field (18-for-52). The Buffanblu shot 6-for-13 from the free-throw line and committed 12 turnovers.

Kamehameha shot 36 percent (17-for-47), including 25 percent from the arc (5-for-20). The Warriors were 6-for-10 from the foul line and had 12 turnovers.
