Hamada service set for Jan. 31

A memorial service for 'Iolani coaching legend Eddie Hamada has been set for Jan. 31 in the St. Alban's Chapel on the school's campus. Visitation starts at 9 a.m., with the service to begin at noon and a reception to follow.

Hamada coached the 'Iolani football team to three Interscholastic League of Honolulu titles and served as athletic director from 1963 to 1991. He died of natural causes on Sunday at age 81.

 

UH women sweep at diving invite

Hawaii claimed the top three spots in the 1-meter event at the Hawaii Diving Invite yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.

Stephanie De Lima won the event with a score of 279.20, followed by Hannah Bocksnick (278.00) and Daniella Nero (277.65). Douglas Cohen placed third in the men's 3-meter with a score of (314.45).

HPU extends hoops win streak

Mike Helton hit four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 26 points as the Hawaii Pacific men's basketball team ran its winning streak to seven with an 80-69 victory at Academy of Art yesterday in San Francisco.

Ray Murdock added 16 and C.J. Jackson had 14 points and 16 rebounds for the Sea Warriors (10-3, 2-0).

» Brigham Young-Hawaii opened defense of its PacWest Conference title with an 86-78 loss at Dixie State in St. George, Utah.

Virgil Buensuceso made four 3-pointers and led the Seasiders (6-4, 0-1) with 25 points. Tom Whitehead led Dixie State with 24 points.

» Steven Bennett scored 30 points to lead Chaminade (4-6, 1-0) to a 71-62 win at Grand Canyon in Phoenix.

The Silverswords made nine 3-pointers and went 24-for-28 from the free-throw line.

» Justin Smith scored 24 points on 11-for-17 shooting in Hawaii-Hilo's 66-51 win over Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif.

Bryan Ngo added 13 points for the Vulcans (8-4, 2-0).

 

HPU women rout Academy of Art

Jazzmin Awa-Williams scored 13 points to lead four Hawaii Pacific players in double figures and the Sea Warriors defeated Academy of Art 73-54 yesterday in San Francisco.

Genesis Lewis had 11 points and 10 rebounds for HPU (6-4, 2-0). Mana Hopkins and Courtney Buster contributed 10 points each.

» Kia Gibson scored 23 points to lead Grand Canyon to a 104-60 win over Chaminade (1-8, 0-1). Kellene Costello led the Silverswords with 16 points.

» Mahina Gago had eight points and eight rebounds for BYUH (4-7, 0-1) in the Seasiders' 77-35 loss at Dixie State.

» UH-Hilo's Hina Kimitete hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points, but the Vulcans (3-10, 0-2) suffered a 75-58 loss at Notre Dame de Namur.
