Honolulu police caught Chadwick Tadly with his pants down before his arrest for allegedly fatally shooting his 22-year-old friend on New Year's Day.

Tadly was sitting on the toilet when officers entered his Waipahu apartment and discovered the victim lying in a pool of blood on the living room floor.

A woman who lived nearby told police the 37-year-old man had confessed to her that he had shot her child's uncle.

When police confronted Tadly, he denied knowing the young man, Kamuela Kaleikilo, although police later learned the two had been friends, according to a police affidavit establishing probable cause for charging Tadly with second-degree murder.

Tadly made his initial court appearance yesterday and remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail. Tadly has been convicted five times of petty misdemeanors, including theft, driving under the influence and disorderly conduct. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for tomorrow in Honolulu District Court.

At 5:47 a.m. Friday, police were sent to 94-010 Leolua St., Tadly's apartment building complex. But the officers were unable to find the reporting person or the scene of a shooting and left, the police affidavit said.

Then a little over an hour later, at 6:53 a.m., officers were sent to Tadly's apartment, C-302, in the same building.

Police dispatchers said the female caller said “;her neighbor Chad Tadly had just come to her apartment and told her that he had just shot her kids' father's brother.”;

Responding officers tried to get someone to answer the door and heard a man in respiratory distress near the locked screen door.

When police entered the apartment, they saw signs of struggle, a toppled Christmas tree and Kaleikilo unconscious and “;bleeding profusely”; from a head wound, according to the affidavit. They also found Tadly in the bathroom, with small bloodstains on his left ankle, big toe and slipper, the affidavit said. In a bedroom were an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy.

The 17-year-old, Tadly's son, told police he did not know the victim.

Asked about a firearm, he responded, “;I don't know, my father might have a gun, but he never did show me.”;

Police arrested all three on suspicion of second-degree murder. The 18-year-old was released pending investigation.

Tadly's 17-year-old son was taken to a juvenile detention home, but authorities declined to comment on his status because he is a minor.

Kaleikilo was taken in critical condition to the Queen's Medical Center, where he died.

The Medical Examiner's Office said Kaleikilo was from Waimanalo and died from injuries due to a gunshot wound to the head.
